Whenever I hear the family phone ring I fear that it will be for me, even though 99% of the time it isn't. Mainly because....
1. I don't like socialising.
2. I'm terrible at social skills.
3. I don't know who wants to talk to me.
4. I have a social phobia.

I know some Aspies hate talking on the phone, is this similar with you?

I fear the phone. I won't pick it up unless I know the number.

I am panically scared of the telephone! I don't usually answer it when it rings, and when I have to call someone - I first make the exact list of what I will say..

I used to hate the phone and avoid it if possible. I've gotten over it. However, if it comes down to calling around looking for something or driving around, I still much prefer to just go there.

Absolutely. I have to force myself to make phone calls, and I have to plan out what I'm going to say, even if the phone call is no more than, "Hello, what are your store hours today? Thank you." If I just went with my gut, I'd just say, "Hey, when are you open? 'Kay, bye." And the NTs get really snippy about that. The frustrating thing is, I'm hypersensitive about other people's responses to me, so if I think it over, I know that I'd be upset if someone was short with me, so I try to include all the stuff, in planning ahead, that it never occurs to me to say in the moment. Sometimes I even wonder if I'm AS or just badly raised, which I was, no one taught me diddly because they thought I'd pick it up from my siblings. Yeah, cause I'm psychic. Ha. Some joke. And then I'd get whining from them because I was so rude. Don't teach me manners then call me rude.

So for all I know I'm just traumatized about the danged phone. All I know is, even when you don't get someone's body language that well when you can see them, it still beats having to go by tone alone. And everyone, I swear it's everyone, sounds like they think you're wasting their time if you call them. Anyone else notice that? It's not just us... you call any business and odds are you'll get someone who's in a hurry to give you what you want and get rid of you. Who'd want to call anyone like that? Which is why I wonder why people keep calling me.

when i was younger, swung between hating the phone and also finding it useful - because it meant i could think in pictures while listening to someone WITHOUT having to converse with them face to face. i could ring people occasionally and i rarely answered the phone. I hated the surprise of other people. I could cope with it if i made teh call - because i had prepared myself for interaction.

These days I am fine with the phone. But that has only happened in the past decade. in fact, i have learned that it is my valuable tool for maintaining relating with others i like, WITHOUT having to see them all the time.

I can get rather nevous when I receive a phone call. If it's related to stuff such as my bank or college and they ask a question that I can't understand, I'll try and ask what they mean and/or if that doesn't help me, I'll pass it over to my dad and let him help me with the call.

I used to be literally phobic of phone-calls, to the point where I would have a full-blown panic attack if I had to make or receive one. I lived in constant fear of the phone ringing.

Nowadays, I can make and receive calls (heck, I even worked in a call centre for 6 weeks! I amazed myself!), but I still dislike 'em and avoid them as much as possible.

as the only male in 5 females around the house, I can assure you I never get calls, because the phone's usually busy...;)

I am constantly on the phone at work; and in fact they check to see if I've called every contact with a problem. So I guess I'm used to it. It's easier than face to face...no one cares where my eyes are while I'm on the horn...;0

I talk to most people on IM. Adium doesn't have voice/video chat, so I am at no loss.
I like to text people on AIM. I don't do text messaging on the phone though. Everyone in my class is always texting, but I never do.

I hate using the telephone and will go out of my way not to use it. For instance if I want to see the Doctor I'll go and make a apointment in person (only 5min walk from where I live though). I have to plan what to say before I call as others mentioned. In fact the other day I almost had my credit card cancelled because I answered one of the "security questions" wrongly because I was panicing.

I used to be downright scared of answering the phone, now I just dislike it.

1) I find it hard to talk on the phone. I have no idea why, but it just doesn't feel right. I'm all monosyllabic answers.
2) I hate the sound of it ringing! If it doesn't make me jump, it irritates me like crazy. :x

I never know when it's my turn to talk. So I end up talking over people, not talking, and I end up confused.

Ha, yes, that's the other thing... people often get annoyed with me because they can't get through to me on my cell-phone, because I usually have it switched off because the sudden sound of it ringing (or vibrating on silent mode) startles me too much! I hate being on edge waiting for a call, because of the sudden noise.
