I saw the "odds of child entering the NFL" one before and that one, since it was a home video, I almost expected the "so-and-so was killed on such-and-such date by a drunk driver" ad that I saw on TV during the 90s before I saw the "odds of a child being diganosed with autism: 1 in 150."

Autism Speaks can go to hell. I am not a parasite. The people at Autism Speaks are parasites.

I'd respond to this, but I'm clearly unable to speak for myself. Apparently, my AS diagnosis is much more frightening to the general public than dying in a car accident, so I'm going to keep a low profile for awhile and feel ashamed at what a cold, unfeeling stone of a person I am and reflect upon the ways that my saintly family is carrying the heavy burden that is ME.

Isn't that what the Autism Speaks people are trying to get across? You see, I'm very bad at reading faces, but very good at understanding the subtexts of print matter. It's one of my aspie superpowers.

Bought up? Are we in the land of corporate takeovers? Autism Speaks is an organization with it's own agenda which does not include much input from those on the spectrum, and works frequently to control negative perceptions of their actions instead of working on the behalf of those they espouse to.

That was an April Fools joke which right now I wish was not a joke.

Yes, we get that it's more likely than a fatal car crash. But a FATAL car crash? I don't have any energy left to be outraged with; my major feeling about this is more like, "Are we getting anywhere at all? Haven't they learned?"

The ad implies:

"People worry about their children dying in car crashes. But autism is much more common. We should be much more worried about autism than car crashes."

Agree with that interpretation? OK.

It also implies that autism is about as bad as dying in a car crash. To prove that, I'll replace "autism" with something that is obviously NOT worse than dying in a car crash.

"People worry about their children dying in car crashes. But losing a limb is much more common. We should be spending more time preventing children from losing a limb."

The statement now seems nonsensical, doesn't it? Preventing death is more important than preventing disability that doesn't cause death. Especially when there are ways to help someone adjust.

You said that perfectly.

I try to sympathize with the plight of mothers with severely autistic children. It must be hard. But what gets me is all this horrible negativity. It's practically an assault on autism, which is an attack on all autistic people.
No good can come from telling an entire race of people they are innately less than desirable (to put it lightly).

Autism speaks can kiss my rosy red butt. This ad is horrible. It's so horrible I would go before a large auditorium full of people to tell them from the stage and stand on top of a ladder (I am scared spitless of both crowds and heights) to tell them what a piece of human feces the folks are at Autism Speaks.

Well I think that the ad should be withdrawn.

Car wrecks and autism have nothing to do with each other.

Should autism speaks consider some other things, and tell a different message to people

Based on NCI data (http://progressreport.cancer.gov/doc.as ... ol&chid=73) the general population which includes autism speaks members have a 1 in 182 of being diganosed with cancer in the next year.

For the average american has a 1 in 196 chance of being locked up in jail right now.
http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/prisons.htm. Over 40 years that works out at about a 20% chance !

29% of all deaths in the US are due to heart disease
http://cdc.gov/heartdisease/statistics.htm

Should autism speak add these to their next report, they could say your kid has at least about a 20 % chance of growing up to get cancer or become a jailbird and then a 29% chance of getting fatal heart disease. These are much more common than either autism or car wrecks.

Diagnosed under the DSM5 rules with autism spectrum disorder, under DSM4 psychologist said would have been AS (299.80) but I suspect that I am somewhere between 299.80 and 299.00 (Autism) under DSM4.
