For those with NLD how did you find someone to diagnose you?

I was diagnosed by an educational specialist person-- they dealt with learning disabilities. I think they'd only encountered one other person with NLD before...

thanks. I saw a learning disabilities specialist at a community college. I took an IQ test but she said she couldn't diagnose me.

around a 40 pt difference between viq and piq with viq higher. an improvement from my elem school eval.

I took an IQ test two years ago, and I took achievement tests this past May. With the data of both types of tests, NLD was very obvious. The licensed psychologist who administered the tests diagnosed me with NLD, but she didn't call it that. She wrote "Learning disorder NOS." I said, "Is this supposed to be NLD?" She said, "Yes." But, of course, NLD is not yet in the DSM, so it wasn't an option to put "NLD" alongside my DSM-IV diagnoses of AS and OCD. The psychologist I saw seemed to know a good bit about NLD.

My son was first diagnosed by a pediatric psychologist from a psycho-educational eval. he was then given an additional diagnosis of AS from a clinical psychologist who was part of the autism center at our local children's hospital.

I was diagnosed at the psych clinic at my graduate school. I was diagnosed by a grad student (under the supervision of a licensed psychologist) so I don't know whether she already knew a lot about NLD, or whether she researched it for my evaluation, but anyway my diagnostic report has a lot of NLD-specific information in it, including stuff about how people with NLD cope in social situations, so she clearly knew what she was talking about.

Another question is: How were your social skill assessed?

I think the motor and visual-spatial can just be assessed by testing.

My social skills weren't assessed, and I figure that this is because I already had a diagnosis of Asperger's. My diagnosis of NLD was based solely on the discrepancy between performance and verbal IQ (17 points higher for verbal) and my performance on the achievement tests. I think that the other NLD symptoms were just assumed, since I was already known to have AS. I basically just say I have Asperger's with visual-spatial/mathematical learning problems. The AS overrides the NLD.
