....and dread it. Some years apart from Xmas day itself I just work right through and then take a couple of days off for countryside on the days when everyone goes back in Jan. I never watch tv, no kids, wife can be endlessly stuck in a book. If I didn't have this dog goodness knows it would be dull. Luckily we go away though wifes boss said next year NO HOLS at this time. Nazi. If I don't get away I will be ill, anger, depression, tho anger mainly. This south peace stinks is a favourite quote at this time.

Xmas is the time, like UK Bank holidays when ones isolation seems a little too obvious.

Why do you detest and dread Christmas?

Something in your past?

I'm not a big fan of it either.

I hate that everyone expects me to go to church. I am a Christian but I don't do organized religion (have yet to go to a church where everyone isn't competing to be the best Christian). I also hate the gift giving thing. I mean, it seems like a waste of money for the most part. 95% of my gifts never get used. The best gifts IMO are gift cards and money since you can get things you know you will use.

It was fun as a child but I guess it's sort of worn off as an adult.

Christianity IS an organized religion. Even if you don't go to church, you're still adhering to a belief system that was designed by a larger community, and in Christianity, a much larger and much older one, than just whatever beliefs system you may design by yourself.

I don't see why you call yourself a Christian. If you aren't, you shouldn't.

That is the same reason I don't go to church. I got fed up with Catholics telling me I was wrong because I'm not catholic, Baptists telling me I'm wrong because I'm not Baptists, Lutherans telling me I'm wrong because I'm not Lutheran, and the list goes on.

I'm not a big fan of Christmas either, all that fake good cheer just drives me up the wall.

Can I suggest focusing on the authentic good cheer rather than what you perceive to be fake?

I'm the complete opposite, I obsess over Christmas.

I'm constantly making lists of what I want for Christmas. Constantly talking about it to my family. Constantly asking if there's any gifts I can help / watch someone wrap. Or just standing there admiring the presents. The other night I noticed that I had grabbed a gift and started rocking back and forth, while clutching it. =p But I don't have any visitors or outside family come over, and we do not attend Church-- so I have no reason not to like Christmas. =]

I tend to obsess over the holidays as well- but from a purely aesthetic perspective. It took me a week just to decorate the tree. I have spreadsheets on my various decorations and a diagram of the method used to decorate the tree. I have been painting my own christmas village because the ceramic traditional ones don't suit my style.

Me too. Too much change by the time I finnaly get used to it, it's time to put everything away. Everybody is so stressed and pushy, Christmas is too comercial, everybody expects a gift but when I ask them what they would like they go, "Aww you don't have to get me anything." If I actualy don't they seem disapointed. I used to like the gift aspect of it when I was younger but that was the only thing I liked and was labeled selfish and greedy. People were always coming into the home all the time unannounced and I was often expected to go to other people's homes. I was always SOOO stressed, agitated and grumpy during the Christmas season.
My nickname around this time of year was often Grinch or Scrooge. No one can find gifts I will like because all the stuff I collect is things you can find on eBay, you can't find meerkat or Lion King things in stores. I did not even like it as a kid. I HATE Christmas. There is nothing happy or merry about it.

Then I challenge you to find or create something happy about it.
Good cheer isn't just handed to you on a platterm, dearie- you have to create it.
Some of us enjoy this time of year and all the potential it has. Some of my very best childhood memories come from Christmas at the grandparent's house.

Good cheer depends largely on having people to share it with. I used to love Christmas when I was a kid, because it was a serious family affair, but now that I am isolated, without friends or family, I find it very lonely - the loneliest time of year. Especially because it's also my birthday. And spending time with well meaning strangers doesn't work - it's not a substitute for having a real family. Unfortunately.

A lot of isolated lonely people find Christmas hell.

I like Christmas, even if I had no one to share it with I still would coz you get time off to chill and there's a whole bunch of films on TV.

Edit: plus, I'm not religious.

I call myself a Christian because I believe in Christ. I can appreciate Christmas as celebrating Christ. I don't appreciate it for the commercial bull**** that it has become.

Exactly. Being a Christian means you live a Christ-inspired life.
I deplore organized religion but I consider myself to be a Christian in the ways that I perceived Christ to be: A loving, forgiving and compassionate man.

I HATE "The Holidays" (as it is now called). I wouldn't hate it if they wouldn't start the god damn endless advertising the day after Halloween. "Give gifts this year!" "I want this, I want that.." f**k 'em all.

I cannot stand this insane commercialization. I'm not religious, but if there really is a God, he's gonna send all of the people who take part in this commercialization, straight to Hell.

I really think it's offensive to Christianity, making "gifts" and material possessions the center of this holiday.
