Okay, say for instance, you and some others are dining at a restaurant. You are going to, or leaving your table when you walk by someone you know (sitting at a table) who says "Hi!". Do you stop to talk to them, or do you say Hi and wave, as you continue walking? I've never really known how to act in such a situation.

I think it depends on how you feel about the person. If they are just a casual acquaintance, I would just walk by and say something appropriate with a wave. If I'm a little more invested in the person, I might stop and attempt some sort of small talk. My problem is knowing what an appropriate amount of small talk is. Fortuneately, most people who know me are pretty in tune and able to give me some sort of cue that it's time to stop.

I usually say hi to them, and maybe have a short conversation with them.

I usually say Hi and keep walking, at the most I'll go to them and speak, but I keep it very brief as they are either eating or in the process of ordering their food, and I don't want to hold them up.

i say hi and enter into a monolgue that could last for anywhere up to an hour unless i am stopped. (sad but true....i am like a keen little aspie kid and i will undoubtedly swing it around to what i am currently researching or working on..)

the only way for me to not enter into a monologue is to not say hi.

(i am currently learning to do this.)

one or the other, with me.....as the other parents at my son's school have so frequentely pointed out. 8O

Yes, same here! :D

Sometimes if I see a person I know and he/she does not acknowledge me first, then I won't acknowledge him/her either. I will just keep on walking past until I am finally greeted.

That has actually offended a couple of acquaintances, but I can hardly help it.

Depends who it is.

If it's just someone I know, then I probably won't stop.

If it's an an acquaintance I do not like and need not pay much respect/need not pretend to like them, I won't stop either. (Might not even be saying 'hi' then if I want to be really rude.)

If it's an acquaintance and if we both feel it's important to keep a neutral or positive relationship, then I stop and have a super short chat.

If it's a friend, a family member or whatever, I stop to chat with them.

pretty much the same here, although if I don't like the person I'd probably just say "Hi" and speed up a bit lol
