Were you spoiled by your parents? Not cared for? A loner?

I'm just wondering, because I think this might have something to do with AS.

Personally, I was more of a loner growing up, not spending much time with my parents, even though they were nice to me.

Parents were not necessarily cold or unloving, but inescapably incompetent and frequently sufficiently oblivious to my physical and emotional needs as to give the impression of being quite uncaring.

Learned to stop seeking love at an early age, and therefore probably count as a loner.

If your thinking about proposing that nurture causes AS, I do not believe that belief is any longer in vogue (although I would not be surprised if parenting did exacerbate the problem).

I have been raised by age 2 and onwards by just my mother. My mother and I left my father when I was 2.
I am an only child...I wasn't spoilt, but I was cared for. My mother always taught me to be thankful for what I had when I was young, as far as material possessions go.

I spent everyday until I was 4 and a half years old with my mother, she didn't work until then. She taught me lots about gardening and how different plants feed and spread.
I guess I was a bit of a loner. My mother didn't ignore me, I just used to do my own thing and entertain myself.

My upbringing was good from age 2 onwards, so I doubt that it contributes to AS. Aspergers is genetic, anyway....not caused by "bad upbringing".

I never said "bad upbringing." I would think I had more of a good upbringing -- too good, in fact.

It's probably true that it's genetic. But also think of this: Maybe it's the family traditions that make it seem genetic. A child brought up in a rich upbringing will probably spoil their own children, creating a cycle that may give the illusion of being genetic.

My parents did the best job they could with the resources available to them. Now I have children of my own, one of whom is AS himself, and this has brought additional insight into what my own parents must have faced.

I was raised fundamentalist Christian. (yuck!) I had an emotionally abusive mom and a workaholic dad that hit me once (and my brother once) which is one too many.

I'm just going to go ahead and ditto this. Except for one thing. I think the lack of nurturing resulted in me being very independent and learning how to handle everything on my own. So, as an adult, it proves positive in many ways.

Mum was over-protective and dad was very critical, thought I was gay because I didn't like football.

Well I grew up thinking my problems were because had such a bad childhood, but realize now was not my mother thought she was wrongly diagnosed all her life and unable to be a real mother to me. And it wasn't her thought the problems I had, just never quite understood myself, until diagnosed.

I do not think we need to try and blame anyone, just except who we are, after all our symptoms are in fact a part of who we are and at least we share traits which has been behind some of the greatest human achievements to date

Really think it doesn't have anything to do with how or who brought us up, especially as the most proverbial cause is genetic.

I was the definite loner type with few, but high quality friends. Spoiled? I don't know. Compared to the kids I attended school with and especially those of my father's co-workers, no. I had a normal upbringing, nothing extraordinary worth commenting on.

My mom was quite protective of me, not in an overbearing way, though (unlike my big sister, who was so over-protective of me it's funny)

I echo this.
My brother was the 'problem' child. I was pretty much ignored.

I don't really remember, actually. I remember bits of my childhood but I don't remember my parents very well.
