JasonWilkes: Hi everybody! Back in May '08, I posted this big bag of frustrated blah.
Jeyradan: After a favorable response from me and a slew of back-and-forth private messages, we ended up posting this to describe our crazy hanging-out-in-northern-New-York adventures after having gotten to know one another for a few weeks and deciding to meet.
JasonWilkes: Neither of us lived even remotely close to New York. I was from North Carolina, and she lived in some crazy far away place called Alberta, but fortunately, she managed to take some time off from her cancer research to come to New York and goof around with me between my long hard days of math research.
Jeyradan: That's where our last post left off. We thoroughly enjoyed our summer adventures, though, so communication redoubled during the remainder of the season and throughout a long semester of studies for both of us. Jason was in the second-to-last semester of his degree in North Carolina, whereas I had just finished mine in Alberta and was taking courses, doing research, and tutoring in preparation for graduate school.
JasonWilkes: After realizing that grad school decisions would be made before the spring semester's grades were in, she realized that it would be possible to come to my school for a semester before we both headed off into the great unknown of graduate studies.
Jeyradan: This actually occurred to us as a result of a halfway-joking semi-application I had put into Jason's school back in the summer... something that was never supposed to actually happen. But when we realized the possibility at hand, we decided to use our Asperger's superpowers to make it happen, commencing a seemingly endless slog of visa forms, school paperwork and impossibly expensive fees.
JasonWilkes: She was (of course) accepted to my school, and after several more endless slogs of paperwork (including applications to all of the same grad schools in order to ensure that the adventure wouldn't end after six months), and simultaneously running back and forth around Edmonton and Boone, respectively, getting things signed and assuring the school that she didn't have tuberculosis, we finally agreed on the flight date of December 27th.
Jeyradan: Right up until the last minute, various things conspired to throw up obstacles in our paths. It's now past December 27th, though, and despite the unbelievable amount of wearying effort it took on both parts to get us here - two moves (one his, to a new apartment, and one mine, to a new everything), one very long flight, and several endangered forests' worth of paperwork - we now share both a school and an apartment in Boone, and can reiterate our summer adventures whenever we'd like.
JasonWilkes: We've been having lots of fun running around, goofing off, and making fun of my ridiculous country.
Jeyradan: They sell guns at WalMart!
Anyway, everything is awesome, and it all started because of a random post in the General Autism Discussion section of this website.
So, thanks, WrongPlanet.
