Not at all. Life is what you make of it.

it doesn't change who you are. If you are fine with socializing then why stop now? There is no reason to get depressed.

You are changing as is everyone of your friends. It is the way it is. Fnord put it best, Life is what you make of it.

I know I have AS; but it doesn't really get me down. I mean, it causes problems; but they're solvable problems. All in all, life is OK. And having friends as an Aspie isn't impossible, either; most of us have friends, though most of us are not popular.

I think it would be really annoying to be misdiagnosed, though. It's happened to me, and I didn't like it. Have you read through the diagnostic criteria and asked your counselor or therapist or whoever to explain why he diagnosed you that way? Maybe you have one characteristic that's stereotypically associated with Asperger's, but don't actually fit the diagnosis--that's how I was misdiagnosed (multiple times, at that).

If you have a good reason to suspect you aren't actually Aspie, you are very right to question the diagnosis and maybe look for a second opinion. There's no good in getting diagnosed for the wrong thing; you'll get the wrong treatment.

Basically what Callista said. Although for some people with Aspergers socialising can be easier in certain times of their lives than in others, also, I wouldn't look at how you spend time with friends- they get easier and easier to socialise with because eventually you are bound to learn something.

Some people with aspergers can make eye contact pretty easily, but if you've gone and read the symptoms and still have doubts than, yeah, I'd take some time getting things straight if I were you. Of course ADHD, ADD and aspergers are known to overlap in some ways and traits so I suppose it isn't impossible that you were misdiagnosed. :)

another thing is is that the doctors reason for diagnosing me with aspergers is that i dont talk properly; like i mumble alot lol nd its weird cos i seem to speak slightly differently with my parents but with everyone else i speak completely normal, is that a reasonable enough excuse to diagnose me with aspergers??? in fact is that even a symptom of aspergers??? and i'm good at drawing aswell but so what alot of people are good at drawing it don't mean i've got aspergers does it???

Nope, they ain't reasonable excuses. xD Lol it almost sounds like your Doctor's been watching Rainman if that's the best they could come up with. Heheh.

Most people talk differently around their parents compared with how they talk to their mates. It's natural.

It's very normal to get depressed at times.

What you really shouldn't do though is see Asperger's as a disability, especially if like you said you are able to be social and lead a normal life. The disorder is only a label that you can use to find help if you need it.

Callista, et al are right. Question the doctor and get another assessment if you are having doubts. Doctors can be wrong. Plenty of people on this forum have been misdiagnosed more than once before getting a proper assessment.

Whatever the outcome, don't let it get you down. You are still you. Keep on being who you are. No one can take that from you unless you give it away.

alot of the symptoms of aspergers are generalisations and not everyone has them. I suggest talking to ur doctor about why u were diagnosed. Ur friends wont see u any differently. I know how u feel about getting depressed about it in this society u have to be perfect and alot of pressure is put on teenagers and young adults.

Don't worry about leading a normal life plenty of ppl wiv aspergers can lead a normal life. maybe u do have aspergers and maybe u dont but if u do dont get down about it i know its very difficult to do but it can be done.

if u wanna talk to someone u know get things off ur chest then u can talk to me.

I found this at the NAS.

I can't find anything about suspicion of a misdiagnosis, but maybe it might help a little: *shrugs*

and I found this

While depression often occurs with people on the Autistic Spectrum, sometimes ASDs can be misdiagnosed as a psychiatric disorder. I suppose the reverse is possible too. It's something to think about. Good luck. :)
