I just witnessed disrespect towards AS...

I was so offended by this conversation I just witnessed in a game, I couldn't believe it.

Someone was being argumentative, and a person suggested they guess the arguer's age.

A response was this:
"11-13, or 16+ with Aspergers".

Okay so that offended me slightly. But then the response to that guess:
"Way to go, taking shots at ret*ds now."

That offended me greatly. I wasn't even sure what to say other than wow.

And then this "ret*d" individual goes on to explain how much he "knows" about AS and when I send him a private tell explaining that he's just digging himself in a hole and needs to stop, he has the NERVE to tell ME that I need to learn more about AS.

His words: "You should learn a little about your own condition before taking offense by things like this"

Man I am just fuming right now. This is the first time I've really witnessed complete disrespect towards AS in a public medium.

If you become easily offended by things you see on the internet, you should probably log off.

Well technically speaking we are socially ret*d. And many of us act like total dufusses in front of others so yeah I totally see how people can hate and disrespect us.

Being socially ret*d in a technical sense and being a ret*d do not carry the same connotation.

Obviously this person was not speaking technically.


I know a person who (I`m almost sure) has AS. It`s very frustrating to communicate with him. He`s... ugh... so insensitive.
I`ve never thought he`s "ret*d", though. Actually, he`s quite smart.
I have to admit, before I knew about autism I hated him. I thought he was a selfish jerk.

For what it is worth, I fully understand where you are coming from, and agree with you. I AM socially ret*d. I don't deny that. I have never been called ret*d though, and am not ret*d. I DO think I have AS though.

There HAVE been times when people thought I was real stupid for not knowing something, but I could ALSO confound a room by what I DO know.

As you implied, the antagonists have problems. Maybe YOU should pity THEM!

The Good Lord loved idiots, he made so many of them. I wouldn't counsel people of color to better understand themselves...sheesh...

Maybe you could bring up that point. No one would know better than you how AS affects (or doesn't) your own mind.

Funny thing about this. I've often had people think I was much older than I actually am over the internet.

it seems that most of the people who get called ret*ds by others are not actually ret*d [mentally],it's one of those words that doesnt have much use anymore,as it's used against even gifted people,an overused insult.

also maybe everyone needs to stop seeing MR as a disease or something disgusting to be associated with [it isnt],MR is a global weakness-just as may see own difficulties as being similar to-and everyones got difficulties in some form or other,by not reacting badly to things like that,its taking away the effect they want and ignoring the stereotypes.

if this is on a game that has different servers to choose from,or something like xbox live-change places,dont be around people like that.

It's the Internet. As I always say, people lose 70% of their intelligence on the internet. So you can't expect much, it's the Internet; everyone is a black belt on the Internet. In person, these people are a lot more careful.

As far as most ppl I ever talked to, no one ever says ppl with AS are ret*d; quite the opposite they all say they should be accepted for who they are. YET, somehow I am an exception, somehow my AS is worse than other ppl's, so they treat ME like ret*d. But then again, it doens't change their view of AS, after all I am so fucken ret*d I am not worth thinking about, so I don't affect their stats.

Back when I was single there were plenty of girls who explicitly TOLD me my AS is fine with them, and in fact they said how they think that whoever judges me is shallow and did their best to make me feel better. BUT as soon as we have a first date OOOOPS their opinion of me changes.

I find that far more offensive than ppl actually calling aspies ret*ds. At least, that would give a room for debate + chance to prove them wrong.

f**k you once more, ret*d. I am glad at least once someone other than myself is hurt.

I can see why that would be offensive but I have never been discriminated against so I would not know how to react if anything like that happened to me.

Are you OK, Roman? You just seem really upset... I think if I were writing that way I might be better off to find a quiet place and take some time off to relax a while.
