Love my quirky brain but my gut is on fire! Have the proved that shots are the culprit finally? I remember being a toddler and thinking to myself," it is the shots that have made me unable to be happy." This was long before I heard anything else negative about them. I just somehow knew it.

The first research project to examine effects of the total vaccine load received by children in the 1990s has found autism-like signs and symptoms in infant monkeys vaccinated the same way. The study's principal investigator, Laura Hewitson from the University of Pittsburgh, reports developmental delays, behavior problems and brain changes in macaque monkeys that mimic "certain neurological abnormalities of autism."

The findings are being reported Friday and Saturday at a major international autism conference in London.

Although couched in scientific language, Hewitson's findings are explosive. They suggest, for the first time, that our closest animal cousins develop characteristics of autism when subjected to the same immunizations – such as the MMR shot -- and vaccine formulations – such as the mercury preservative thimerosal -- that American children received when autism diagnoses exploded in the 1990s.

The first publicly reported results of this research project come in both oral and poster presentations on Friday and Saturday at the International Meeting For Autism Research in London. Poster presentations must go through a form of peer review before they are presented at the conference; the papers have not yet appeared in a scientific journal.

In addition to Hewitson's oral presentation today, on Saturday in one of two related poster presentations, the researchers also are reporting in their abstract that "vaccinated animals exhibited progressively severe chronic active inflammation [in gastrointestinal tissue] whereas unexposed animals did not. We have found many significant differences in the GI tissue gene expression profiles between vaccinated and unvaccinated animals." Numerous scientific studies, as well as many parents, report severe GI ailments in children with regressive autism.

The results are sure to be controversial, in part because they lend credence to studies first published in 1998 by British pediatric gastroenterologist Andrew Wakefield, one of Hewitson's co-authors on these findings. He described an unusual inflammatory bowel condition in children who had regressed into autism after they received the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination. Wakefield is currently fighting charges of medical misconduct in Britain over allegations of conflict-of-interest and improper procedures related to that paper. He denies the charges.

In the program for the conference, the 7th Annual International Meeting for Autism Research (IMFAR), there are three separate presentations listed that report results from the overall research program. The first, an oral presentation entitled "Pediatric Vaccines Influence Primate Behavior, and Amygdala Growth and Opioid Ligand Binding" (the "amygdala abstract") was led by Dr. Hewitson and lists 12 co-authors, including five of her colleagues from the University of Pittsburgh and Dr. Wakefield. Other authors are chemists, pathologists and psychologists from the universities of Kentucky, California-Irvine, and Washington.

Hewitson's introductory presentation will be followed by two poster presentations on Saturday; one of the two, "Pediatric Vaccines Influence Primate Behavior, and Brain Stem Volume and Opioid Ligand Binding", was led by Wakefield and includes six additional co-authors.

It focuses on the developmental effect of vaccine exposures on brain growth during infancy. The second, "Microarray Analysis of GI Tissue in a Macaque Model of the Effects of Infant Vaccination," was led by Steven Walker of Wake Forest University and performed gene array analysis on the intestinal tissues of the vaccinated and unvaccinated monkeys.

The studies address – albeit in animals, not children -- one of the major criticisms by parents and scientists concerned about a possible link between the greatly stepped-up immunization schedule in the 1990s, including higher exposure to the mercury preservative, and autism. While the Food and Drug Administration approves individual vaccines as safe and effective, and an advisory committee to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the childhood immunization schedule adopted by the states, the overall health outcomes from the total vaccine load, versus no vaccinations at all, have never been compared, the authors said.

A bill requiring the government to conduct a study of autism rates in unvaccinated American children is pending in the U.S. House of Representatives, co-sponsored by Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) and Tom Osborne (R.-Neb.). Just this week, former National Institutes of Health Director Bernadine Healy called for more research into a possible vaccine link to autism and said the question had not been settled, despite repeated assertions to that effect by the CDC, the Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

In the abstract for today's oral presentation, the authors noted that macaques, the type of monkey used in the study, "are commonly used in pre-clinical vaccine safety testing, but the combined childhood vaccine regimen, rather than individual vaccines, has not been studied. Childhood vaccines are a possible causal factor in autism, and abnormal behaviors and anomalous amygdala growth are potentially inter-related features of this condition."

The study found evidence of both behavioral and biological changes after the 13 macaque monkey infants were administered proportional doses, adjusted for age, of the vaccines recommended between 1994 and 1999. Three monkeys were not given any vaccines.

"Primate development, cognition and social behavior were assessed for both vaccinated and unvaccinated infants using standardized tests developed at the Washington National Primate Research Center." MRI and PET scans looked for brain changes after administration of the MMR.

"Compared with unexposed animals, significant neurodevelopmental deficits were evident for exposed animals in survival reflexes, tests of color discrimination and reversal, and learning sets," the authors reported. "Differences in behaviors were observed between exposed and unexposed animals and within the exposed group before and after MMR vaccination. Compared with unexposed animals, exposed animals showed attenuation of amygdala growth and differences in the amygdala binding of [11C]diprenorphine. Interaction models identified significant associations between specific aberrant social and non-social behaviors, isotope binding, and vaccine exposure."

One of the Saturday abstracts makes the further point that the research "revealed significant differences between exposed and unexposed animals" in the kinds of developmental behaviors a mother might be able to observe, "with delayed acquisition of root, suck, clasp hand, and clasp foot reflexes." They conclude by noting that "This animal model examines the neurological consequences of the childhood vaccine regimen, Functional and … brainstem anomalies were evident in vaccinated animals that may be relevant to some aspects of autism. The findings raise important safety issues while providing a potential animal model for examining aspects of causation and disease pathogenesis in acquired neurodevelopmental disorders."

Quack science, sorry. Toddlers hate vaccines. I had a complete phobia of needles for ages, and trust me, that doesn't make you happy. Neither does having a fever for two days after you get one.

Really? You were able to make that association as a toddler?

I remember thinking, "That doctor must hate me because he's giving me those shots." Toddlers think all sorts of illogical things. But you know, it's nice not to have died of measles.

Mother did tell me later on that the doctor wasn't very gentle with me, though. It was a matter of "pin down the toddler and stab her with the needle".

So my mom changed her mind about vaccines and decided they were bad for you; so my littlest sister is completely unvaccinated. And she's every bit as autistic as me! I was talking to her on the phone today, and it was soo obvious--really formal speech, word-finding problems, eccentric special interests, the fact that she still hasn't made a friend, ever, at the age of 13 (but is thankfully introverted, like me, so doesn't require a great deal of social contact)... she's also got digestive problems; can't eat red meat or raw vegetables (but no problems with bread or milk). On the other hand, I have no digestive problems at all...

Autism's genetic. There's no smoking gun, unless it's encoded into your DNA.

As I recall, the whole (hypothetical) vaccine controversy stems from the mercury-based preservative used in vaccines. I think that this may actually be plausible. My thoughts on the issue are based on the fact that the area where I grew up has roughly twice the national average of autism/AS. Up there, wild fish comprise a large portion of most people's diets. Also, these same fish have been labeled 'unsafe for human consumption' due to mercury contamination. Obviously, this may coincidental.

It probably is. If the fish are marked unsafe, most people won't eat them, especially if they think they might be pregnant.

Thimerosal was removed from required childhood vaccines some years back. The increase in autism diagnoses remained unchanged.

Another Autism-Vaccine Study Fails to Support Link

For those of you watching developments in the autism-vaccination connection, another study was released this week to support the growing body of evidence that vaccines do not contribute to autism. This time the publication is of an Italian study of the whooping cough vaccine published by Tozzi et al. and funded by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The data indicate that the mercury-based preservative thimerosal, used in vaccines, doesn't pose a risk to children. Although the conclusions of the paper were that the few links appear to be due to chance, it was admitted that they may warrant further investigation, in the interest, I suppose, of applying the precautionary principle, despite the growing mountain of data that seems to fall terribly short of conclusively supporting a relationship, according to some.

Apparently there is enough evidence to convince even those with a vested interest in the topic. Disability News online reported two weeks ago that the, now former, president of Autism Speaks, Alison Singer, has stepped down because she doesn't support the way funding is allocated to vaccine research over research into other potential causes of autism (environmental) or better treatments for the disorder.

The problem lies in the fact that most people up there are too poor to buy enough food. Therefore, they rely on wild meat, mainly locally cought fish and vinison for a large part of their diets.

I knew they were phasing thimerosal out of vaccines. I didn't realize that it was complete already. Oh well... just a theory, anyhow...

no, they just want an excuse not to have them. As for me, If I jave children I will shoot it-they up with vaccines till they are become a drugstore.

Hey, we don't need more fear being spread around. The chances of catching measles is already low enough, and the chances of dying to the measles with "good health care" are only .1%. That article specifically says global rates. Think about the countries that are more likely to not have adequate health care, or sanitary environments.

Go do the research on just how deadly the diseases you are vaccinating against actually are. Most of them can wait a few years, rather than being pumped into them before the age of 2. I don't know much, but I do know that companies will fear OR comfort you into spending money on their solutions.

They haven't phased mercury out of all vaccines. It is still in every flu shot. They are recommending pregnant woman get flu shots and that children get a flu shot every year. The results of this is children are getting more mercury than ever.

They have replaced the mercury in the other shots with aluminum, another neurotoxin.

Every live virus shot contains MSG a known excitotoxin. MSG also hides in many foods under 30 different names so no, vaccines are not the only cause, just one of many.

Studies show when a life form is under stress things can cross the blood brain barrier that otherwise can't. Children being held down and pierced with a needle are under a LOT of stress, much more so than a laboratory animal being tested for vaccine safety. But this monkey study was pretty conclusive. Read it.


Shots are not our only source of mercury. "Silver" dental fillings are mercury and are considered very dangerous until they are in the patient's mouth. Then for some reason the minute it is in the patients tooth it is considered "safe," despite the fact minute amounts of mercury are released every time the patient chews.

If a mother has "silver" fillings she is giving her baby a dose of mercury right in the womb. Cases where one sibling was vaccinated and became autistic and the other sibling was not vaccinated and also became autistic are not conclusive proof mercury from shots is not the cause of autism if there are many other common sources of mercury in both child's environment. They can also share common subclinical diseases and other environmental toxins.

A Texas study showed the closer children live to a coal burning power plant the more of them are autistic.


They recently did a study and the headlines said, "Study shows no connection between measles vaccine and autism.' But I read the article itself. The last paragraph said the study had only been done on 50 kids and they DID find the measles virus growing in the guts of 2 of those. If measles were the cause of our painful gut problems in only 2 out of every autistic individuals that would mean it was the cause in millions of people. Plus the human gut is around 30 feet long and viruses are very tiny. Imagine searching for a freckle on persons in the dark. It would be very easy for the needle to go between the freckles and not find one on freckled people most of the time.

It may even be possible "mild" measles and other "mild" diseases from children vaccinated with live vaccines are being caught by other non-vaccinated children, especially siblings. "Mild" is not the same as dead. As was said in a recent popular movie "life finds a way."



Obviously we have a problem here. Maybe we need to come up with a NON live vaccines, get ALL the toxins out of vaccines, get mercury out of the environment from other sources and get MSG and another exitotoxin, aspartame out of our diets too.

Are you kidding me? If someone actually became autistic at age 12, this would be a medical miracle. Scientists from around the world would be on this like flies on rice. This has never, ever happened. People are autistic from birth. Proof or GTFO.

Vaccines linked to autism is quack science, but I wouldn't easily claim autism is genetic, think about cases in which one of the twins is autistic and the other isn't.
