I just thought about posting this and figured it would be a good idea, I am very interested in martial arts. Jiu jitsu, okinawan, jeet kun do, choy gar, nintaijutsu, (not ninjitsu) and I think there's some more I can't remember but my point is it is very hard having AS and trying to do martial arts so I thought I would ask if anyone has heard of a famous martial artist or fighter having AS and being succesful. I have been pretty depressed today and some encouragement would be great so has anyone heard of this and if so who are they and what martial art do they practice?

I'm very curious about this myself because I'm a student in Taekwon-Do. Actually, I would love to learn about someone with AS teaching martial arts, because my instructor wants to set me up with a school within the next few years and he is trying to teach me to teach, and I'm having a very hard time with it.

Why are all the arts listed in the poll only Japanese and Chinese styles?

I have a black belt in Taekwondo. I used to help teach the 2-4 yr olds class, yeah that was interesting. I also studied Hapkido, Yudo (which is Korean Judo), Taoist T'ai Chi. Visited Tang Soo Do and Isshinryu schools so have a lot of MA background.

Because I am only interested in those martial arts, the Japanese ones because I am learning Japanese and the Chinese ones because Bruce Lee was Chinese and I look up to him. Not only his physical skill but he was a really smart man.

I will try to google AS martial artists and post what I find, until then anyone with info should post please.
I like to teach but I teach how I learn so it is difficult for me to teach NTs but my two aspie friends have almost no problem learning when I try to teach them.

Hi SethZach,

I have AS and a blue belt in Shuri-ryu karate, and I've helped to teach younger kids. We moved away from the area of the dojo and so I don't train anymore, but I was really loving it. There isn't anything that says having AS should keep you from learning a martial art. We had several developmentally disabled women at our dojo and they progressed very well. It was beautiful to watch.

I think it's very important for Aspies to learn to defend themselves, and to learn to carry themselves in such a way as to discourage people from messing with them. As a woman, I found these skills very, very useful, especially because I am rather short, and people don't immediately realize how physically strong I am until they try to knock me over.

The self-confidence and inner strength I got from studying karate will last me my whole life. I hope to get back to my training one day, but if I don't, I feel I have progressed a lot in terms of self image and a feeling of power.

Don't worry about the motor coordination stuff. A good teacher should be able to help you work on that. I found learning the forms just by watching my sensei to be very difficult, so I would video someone doing the form and then diagram it out for myself so I could remember it. I did just fine, and so will you!

Before I say anyhing else I have to point out you made three errors in my username, First you capitalized the S, second you also capitalized the Z, and last you also misspelled Zack. I am sorry but I am particular about my username, it has been my identity most of my life...

I do appreciate your advice, that does help. If there is no famous martial artists with AS out then I will strive to become the first. :D

I took Shotokan Karate for 2 years, and advanced to white belt...;) I didn't have the 'killer instinct' (was too afraid I'd hurt someone), so I mainly reacted to people attacking me...;)

I have zero martial arts experience and don't know one type from another but I have always been intrigued by it because I think it would help me get over my fears of: the dark, being alone, being robbed, being attacked, being carjacked, being kidnapped, being raped... among other fears I constantly struggle with. Yeah sometimes I am paranoid 8O

I don't have a killer instinct either, I don't want to hurt anyone I just want to be left alone and defend myself mostly.

When I was younger (15) I was involved in Tae Kwon Do and did fairly well at it. In fact, this was one of two sports I have been able to do well in (the other is inline skating)--all others I completely sucked at doing. I can't say I would have been great as with both I seemed to have meet my fullest capabilities somewhat quickly, but I did do well enough to actually enjoy both.

I was about to recommend nunchaku but that is a very difficult weapon to learn, maybe try picking up a staff and see if you have talent with it. Many things lying around a house or building can be used as a staff so that may be good for you.

Wow quite a lot of people into Ta Kwon Do, I wonder why that is...

I took brazilian jiu jitsu for a few months. Jiu Jitsu was fun, but I got sick of the instructor telling me I would "never be a ballerina". At least it got me interested in MMA. It's the only sport I follow.

Now I expected many people to like jiu jitsu because of it's recent popularity spike, my uncle used to teach jiu jitsu and I got interested it mostly from him.

Bad news... most "defensive" moves in martial arts have little or no chance of working in real life, unless you're really fast and/or the other guy is slow/dimwitted/drunk or all three. The only real effective "defense" is a swift killer-instincty attack and run the hell away while he's recovering.
