I AM surprised about your plea as to when you should wear certain clothes. Yet you are seeing benefits from lifting weights, which I would think is harder. When I was a kid, they didn't put such an emphasis on protein, and many advocated working out all the time. Even today, people don't know if it is 1gm-2gm per kilo or per pound! Per kilo is less than HALF! Ratios and total calories is even MORE vague!
Of course, you CAN stray. Stray too much, however, and your gains are a LOT lower.
