I have always had a difficult time falling asleep and an equally if not more difficult time waking up. I can cope if I can wake up naturally because usually I can just wake up really slowly and take my time once out of bed to just relax until I'm fully awake. But the worst thing is waking up to an alarm clock or a person. Being startled into consciousness sets my mood for the day as grumpy and generally unhappy, but I don't have a better way to wake up and I'd like one because I have to start a morning job soon and I'm a natural night person so waking up in the morning is really difficult. I put this in the autism section because I've read that being startled by loud noises is common among aspie and auties so I was hoping that maybe someone here has come up with some sort of solution to the annoying and somewhat frightening alarm clock. Any ideas?

I hate waking up to an alarm clock. I don't use one. I'm lucky I have a job with flexible hours so I can get up as late as 8:30 even. Try getting an internal alarm clock, by going to bed each day at the same hour and getting up at the same hour. Then your body will get used to it and sleep and wake up at the right time.

You can try setting the radio to go on in the morning and you can set it to a soft volume. Even if it is soft, if the radio stays on, it could wake you.

What I really want is an mp3 player with a built in alarm to set any mp3 you want to wake you. There are plug in speakers that don't have to use any power source that can plug into the headphone jack of the mp3 player.

Me too. Always have and probbly always will. I really have to force myself. The only thing that helps is the thought that laying in bed later means I'm going to have an even harder job getting to sleep that night than usual. :?

Not everyone has an iPod, but an iHome accessory is great for one. It's a speaker/alarm system with a dock for an iPod.

For me, I use that to wake me up with the radio. My local rock station pretty much just contains talking in the early morning, and a lot of the time they're having a very interesting conversation. I might lay there in bed still awake listening to that conversation. Eventually I'll be wide awake in a few minutes and get out of bed to get ready for work.

I have a lot of trouble getting 'awake', and getting to sleep. I do not like alarms and if someone else is waking me, I will ask them to start to wake me between 30 minutes and an hour before they need me awake.

If you can wake up with music, the idea of having an 'alarm' that plays music rather than the more alarming alarm sounds (as suggested by an earlier poster) might be a good idea. It would also be a good idea to figure out if you are better off 'slow waking' in stages (wake up call/alarm followed by snooze followed by further call/alarm) or better off 'get and up go' waking (wake up call/alarm followed by immediately getting up and out of bed).

Good luck with your new job.

Or seep into your dreams.

I have the same issues. I only go to sleep when I'm exhausted...waking up for class was a nightmare. I was late every day. Now that I have a job for which I need to wake up at 6:00am, I try to be more careful. Unfortunately, my sleep schedule is all over the place still. Two days ago, I went to bed at 3:30 am and woke up at 6:30am. Coffee.

Yesterday I was exhausted from what little sleep I had, fell asleep at 4:30pm and woke up at 6:00am no problem.

I blame my age :?

Also, I despise alarms. It's a terrible feeling when it goes off, isn't it? I use my cell phone's alarm.

SamwiseGamgee,
if it is the sound that causes the problem, what about one that uses other ways of waking up?
am not able to use clocks and am got up by staff instead, but know deaf/HoH users on a disability forum that use no noise clocks.
here's a list of them can buy from the UKs national deaf organisation-RNID: http://www.rnid.org.uk/shop/products/clocks/?pn=2
but can probably get them anywhere,if are in UK,it's possible could even get them off an OT for free if they assess them as part of needs.

When I go to sleep I like to set the sleep timer on the radio to listen to Coast to Coast. I fall asleep, the radio turns off automatically. But I would like wake up to a different radio station. I want the radio to come on in the morning to a different radio station without me having to manually change it.

One motivation for getting up in the morning. To get to mcdonalds or burger king 15 minutes before breakfast ends. They can start on the breakfast sandwich, and when lunch starts you can get beef on it instead of the pork.

If you've got a laptop i'm sure you can rig it up to play music in the morning with Task Manager. I think you can also put it into sleep mode and it'll turn itself back on when it's time. I just haven't tried it yet.

I've rigged it up to play Enya's Orinoco Flow every morning at 9.00. I bet it doesn't work...

Change the alarm clock.

There are many alarms that start out really quiet and get louder with each sequence.

The alarm function of mobile phones is set like that usually.
