As I child, I had a good deal of GI problems, which "abated" in late childhood and took the form of chronic constipation. When I started smoking tobacco in my late teens, I was suddenly able to have regular, non-painful bowel movements like other people. Since I quit smoking a couple of weeks ago, I have only had, perhaps, three bowel movements. Currently, it has been over three days since the last time I moved any foeces. This causes the following problems:

1) Interrupts my routine - annoying in and of itself, to say the least. Also, I cannot shower if I haven't evacuated my bowel first.

2) My abdomen hurts

3) It is obviously not healthy

Does anyone have any advice as to how I can get my bowel movements to become more regular, short of artificial, chemical laxitives or cigarettes?

You have tried a high fiber diet, etc.? The usual Western diet is not very good for digestion. Switching to whole wheat could make a big difference all by itself, and of course there are fiber supplements and such (but really, it's best to get fiber from your food)...

Agreed on the laxatives. They're not for long-term use and will cause many more problems than they solve.

I'm not at all sure just how this has anything to do with a forum for Autism and Aspergers....
...but to answer your question you need to see a doctor.

Nocturnal Quilter: Agreed. This is not germain to the topic of this forum. However, the health and fitness section doesn't seem to recieve that many hits. Thus, I figured that I would get more of a response here.

Callista: thanks. I was thinking about adding prunes to my diet. I do eat a good deal of whole grains, but that may not be enough, anymore.

Thanks. Prunes and Liquorice. I'll purchase some of each tomorrow. :)

I would suggest you buy some metamucil or citucil to help with the constipation. They are both fiber drink mixes. Metamucil is better in my opinion because it doesn't leave you feeling bloated and gasy. Cirtucil does, well atleast to me. My crazy meds cause me to get backed up

To prevent from getting constipated, you should drink a lot of water and eat stuff with fiber in it.
