I've run up my credit card over the past few months because my pay hasn't been very good due to not working very much. I'm starting to get to the limits of that. Should I apply for food stamps while I'm on disability? How would you do that?

BTW, I'm in TN, USA.

It is easy to apply.

In Tennessee, the link http://www.tn.gov/foodstamps explains it all.

You should definitely apply. I work part time and I still qualify for EBT. Had I known that I would have gotten on it a long time ago. I'm in GA and here the amount you get is based on how much you earn and how much rent/utilities you have to pay. It's probably the same in TN.

Apply as soon as you can because even if it takes awhile to process your application, they will give you retro pay going back to the date of your application.

but don't count on making it through the whole month on the stamps (actually a magnetic card, at least in ohio). our's last about 2.5 weeks.

...I was under the impression that I received too much SSDI to get food stamps , but I've had it suggested that that might not be so .

What kind of food do you buy? I get $194/month as a single person and it lasts the whole month.

If you are over a certain threshold you can still get some food stamps, but the amount would be a mere pittance for what you did to apply for them.

...I thought I'd just go to some social services agency/s , that's really a lot of effort ? Or $ spent , you seem to even be saying ?

Yeah, you should definitely try. But how much you get depends on your income.
