how do i know if i have Asperger's?
i just found out about Asperger's and read the entire part on wikipedia on what is is and a lot of the symptoms i have, but i am not sure if i am the one with this "disorder."
for example, i am very socially ret*d and socially awkward. but so are many other people and they are not Asperger's. i dont know when to look at people when i should and not to look at people when i shouldnt. so when a girl on bart is looking at me im not sure what to do so i end up staring and making the moment weird or not looking at all by avoiding her 100%. it's sort of like i dont know what each look means and if it means some interest i am too negative to take it as that (maybe.) there is a lot more but i believe it all came from my disfunctional upbringing.
also, i do tend to like weird things and not to like all the "normal" things all the guys like (sports, parties, cars, etc..) i am mos def on the "weird" side and dont have any friends that are real close to me but not sure if i got Asperger's...
There is more to AS than being socially awkward. Do you stim, do you like changes? Are you literal, have difficulty reading between the lines and getting jokes? Do you have obsessions or narrow interests? Also look at the AS DSM criteria.
There is a lot to AS than just social retardation and being shy.
You can go to a doctor who specializes in it and he or she will tell you if you have it or not. I heard it's not good to bring up a label in the doctor's office because they will just say you don't have it. They don't like their patients trying to place labels on themselves so all you can do is tell them your symptoms.
what is stim?
but yes i do take everything literal and don't get the jokes. but then that's just another form of social retardation. i never had any siblings and never was around many kids growing up so i was always secluded and not around many people. so thats why i have a hard time reading jokes and take everything literal imo. do i like changes? i dont know, it depends on what you mean. what is AS DSM criteria?
Stimming is repetitive body movements like rocking, hand tapping, hand flapping, and it can also be fiddling with objects. Pen clicking is a stim, foot taping is a stim, drumming your fingers is a stim. Of course everyone stims, even NTs.
AS criteria.

But Auties and Aspies can be quite creative in our stimming.
