Anyone else obsessed with medicine?

Hi. I have studied medicine since I was 8 or 9 years old, through reading books, TV, and more recently the internet. I sometimes spend hours each day on this and if someone I know has symptoms of anything I am quick to try and diagnose. If I don't instinctively know something I enjoy the research. Sometimes it can be something someone's GP missed. I went through a stage of studying psychology when I was in my teens. I'm fixated during medical documentaries and annoy my husband by constantly commenting. I never miss medical dramas either. I have some auto-immune diseases and have been able to research these extensively and self medicate where the NHS lets me down. I feel that I have a natural flair for medicine and diagnosis, but could never work in that field due to my social difficulties and OCD.

Since I was a kid, it has seemed to me that when I am sick, it is kind of like doing an experiment on myself. Seeing how my symptoms develop, how my body responds, and what is the appropriate medical intervention is just fascinating. I read several medical news websites daily and never miss an episode of "Mystery Diagnosis". The one time I socially shine is when someone else is sick. I actually ask them questions (at a distance) about their condition, symptoms, treatment, etc. I'm more interested in the disease than in them, though they rarely notice! Never wanted to go into medicine though, because I have my limits--want nothing to do with vomiting or gross stuff. Also, no groaning or screaming. But I do find the research and puzzle-solving aspects of diagnosis to be very compelling. You have a soul sister in California!

That was one of my special interests a coupla years ago!

I'm the same way, but perhaps not on as great of a scale. And for me the interest only developed over the last few years.

I am fascinated by medicine. I like to watch medical programs.

Ohhhhh yeah. I actually researched what it would take to become a doctor, last year. The local college's program doesn't allow people to hold jobs while pursuing a medical degree. So out for me. But it is, sadly, my missed calling. An easy reference. Something that is easy to call up facts about in relation to other facts and synthesize ideas about like....magic. That easy. That interesting.

Of course, I am a perfectionist. And my mind automatically goes to "what is wrong with this and how can I fix it"? Add a knack for catastrophe and there is "doctor" written all over it.

The diagnostic part of medicine would interest me, as would the satisfaction in solving others' problems. I don't invite it, but sometimes people treat me like their personal physician, which is worrying, so I remind them I'm not qualified.

I used to pretend I had a bad cough JUST to have some Robitussin....oh how that burning sensation feels going down my throat...SOOOOOOOOOOOO good.

And no..I'd only take one teaspoon...I'm not some freakin' addict, here!

Every second year when I was a kid, it seemed like I was into medicine. When I got the measles vaccine when I was 7 or 8, when I got the hepatitis B vaccines when I was 9 and 10, when I was 12 and had a throat abscess, when I was 13 and 14 and had the meningitis vaccine and was diagnosed with AS, and now I'm into psychiatry and psychoactive drugs a little, but don't know much about them.

Yea, medicine is very much an obsession. I had my mom teach me how to take a Blood Pressure when I was 8 (my mom was a nurse--she's now disabled as am I). I used to try to read her textbooks and asked what this or that meant. Anatomy and Physiology was my favorite class in high school and I have my BA in Neuroscience. I was planning to go to med school, but I became very ill and now can no longer work. I have a rare genetic collagen deficiency called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (have fun with that one people! Fantastic info can be found on GeneReviews). I research everything, and try to learn as much as I can. My geneticist says I should do something in medicine. I would love to, I just don't know what. I don't have the physical stamina to go through med school. But like many have said here, I watch all the medical documentaries, shows, dramas, everything medicine. I love learning about how things work, especially the body and the brain. I love the complexities of the brain and how everything works. In fact my thesis in college was neuroendicrinologically based. My panel for the thesis presentation was willing to help me write a grant to be approved to extend my study into grad school. I would have had to stay in New Hampshire though.

Ewww... I can't even swallow that stuff. It's a really good thing they make tasteless pills that do the same thing or else I might have had some awful coughs.


And to the first poster, it's great that you found a career to match your interest. I've never been too interested in medicine, but I did take an interest in stem cells after I wrote an essay about them a couple years ago. And as for strange medical conditions, I might have an extra set of ribs. I'm not sure (although I could probably find some old X-rays and look), but I know my mother does.

Omg I think I'm going to puke... thats one of the more disgusting things I've read on here so far...
