yeah..... there is something wrong with this picture..... When someone wants to know the ages of people who come here.... for what reason.?.. With all the sexual predators out there.... and the preteens who are members here..... this site is ripe for abuse.... of the kids who come here. you can be goddam sure i will write to newspapers, make phone calls, whatever... to warn people.... this is not really a good place for anybody looking for help is it... and im not going to sit by and watch....... you're' going to have quite a reputation what with wm. freund, and this..... and the psych wannabes

I agree. Posting the age of users allows for predators to identify targets.
I am not sure how to fix this, though. There is a kids forum and any predator could go there for targets and not even need to know ages.
It does bother me, but I think we may be in the minority as other forums also identify the ages of their young posters.
Perhaps there should be a different kind of layer of protection such as getting parent's consent for under the age of 13 (? 18?) to be a member.
It is hard to protect against everything.
I agree with you that this is not a place for people to come looking for help. It wasn't meant to be. People do come here looking for help, and sometimes get it, but it doesn't change the purpose.

This is not a trick question, is it?

parents need to be responsible for their children. I think that WrongPlanet isn't even one of those sites that has predators. and we don't post the age of members

Violations of the terms of service should be reported. I wasn't even aware of this. If I had, I would have done something about it sooner.

Members only post their ages voluntarily. They've asked that their ages be added to that thread. If a member doesn't want to share his or her age, or a member's parent doesn't want it, then he or she doesn't have to post it.

I tried telling them they shouldnt put pictures and stuff here.

First of all, if WrongPlanet were to have 'quite a reputation what with William Freund', then there would scarecly be an organisation alive that DIDN'T have 'quite a reputation'. Unfortunately, William is not the only person to have committed an act of violence, nor is he the only individual to be mentally unbalanced. As grieved as the community is, WrongPlanet was not the cause of William's decisions and thus does not deserve a stigma on his behalf.

As for knowing people's ages, I find it helpful as it enables me to have a basic conceptual knowledge of who I am interacting with. That is not to say that I will only interact with people of a certain age, race and gender, but rather that I will have a sort of fact-file pop up when I talk to different people... like if I'm talking to Vivi, I get this freaky old green hag with warts on her nose and The Eyebrow and... oh crap, did I just say that? *runs and hides!*

Ay yi yi, I had such a different vision...I was thinking tall slim chic and sexy. You know, the ones with the revealing Paris fashions and the long cigaretter holder and the elbow length gloves? Oh, and the high heels.
