Our school has a rather large Deaf community. So, I was browsing through the school paper when I found a small article about Deaf Pride. Which surprised me, because everything in it was worded almost the same as that of the Autistic Pride community.

"Don't be scared of us."
"We'll gladly answer questions about how it's like to be deaf."
and most of all...
"Most of us would never want to gain hearing for anything."

(Insert self-doubt about validity of comparison here.)

I think autism is a lot more like deafness or blindness than all those dread diseases they compare it to at Autism Speaks (leukemia, muscular dystrophy, aids, diabetes). It's generally permanent once you've got it, and it causes problems with communication. Since I don't look different, this is how I experience autism.

The analogy is very strong.

Do they really encourage people to view them as public-information terminals for deaf issues? Must be ghastly for them.
