What methods do you use to give yourself an emotional push or jump start... or to feel like you can connect with people, etc?

I.E.

For me it is music and writing mostly... I think movies/video games are more for distraction purposes. Like when I think about sad or happy things, of any severity, I don't ever feel like I know I should, and if I do it never lasts. I even try to hold on to it but I always lose it. One thing I noticed that helps me feel a connection or whatever is music. When I find a song that makes me sad or happy I listen to almost exclusively and it feels like trying to start an emotional engine with a broken fuel injector... but it's still nice. And occasionally I like to imagine being able to play the song in front of people as if it were a median to get passed the barrier between myself and others and let people know that I care for them, or whatever. I don't know... I also like to write short stories in a huge metaphor to express care or affection in some way, and people seem to genuinely like them, but when I ask them how it comes off emotionally to them they often say the opposite of what I was feeling when I wrote it.

But yeah... those are a few of the main ones for me. Music and writing. How about you?

I find that I can express myself through music. Not writing music- but in the songs I choose to sing or play on my fiddle. I am somewhat able to add emotion into the music myself; this makes it easier to express my feelings. I've noticed I have a much stornger relationship with my music teachers than with any other teacher. I believe this is because emotions are expressed through the music and I can see the connection. It's a way to narrow the gap between myself and others, I suppose.

I agree, I also have a very strong emotional connection to music. Not only does it enable me to feel, but I also use it...actually, I should say I NEED it- to calm myself down when I´m stressed, or to focus when I need to. I rely very much on music, and it´s very important in my life.

In terms of connecting with people, I would say the best way is through my main life "special interest", which has been dance. (Now that I am a retired dancer, I still connect through dance, but in the form of my own choreography). I have also directed a few shows, mostly musical comedy, which has been another way of communicating with people. The shows and choreographies were always the fun part, as well as listening to the audience reaction...the hard part was after, when people wanted to talk to me. I used to hide myself from people after the shows, when I directed.

I wouldn't call mine strong... I'm not sure what it is really, but the tones in certain songs make me feel something, even though I can't understand why. Like if the song is sad and I start to feel something it's like a mixture of happy/sad that comes in a big rush that doesn't last long. Which I really like, even though it's a sad song or sad feeling. I think it's because it seems like I don't feel anything so much of the time... which I hate.

For me, it's writing and art.

Listening to music, interacting with animals and plants, and writing for myself.
