I'm just curious about just how famous Simon BC actually is. Of course to aspies based in the UK he i really famous cos he's always on the radio and in the papers, eg his recent involvement in the GAry McKinnon case.

But do you guys from America, or the rest of the world for that matter know of him? And would you have heard of him had it not been for his name popping up in this forum

I am in the US and I know of him through this site, and also my therapist had me practice with a PC program he developed to help with emotion recognition in faces.

I wouldn't have known if he was currently alive or not, but it's common here to take a test known by his name, so you should find decent name recognition, even if most don't know much about him.

I'm from the upper Midwest in the US (Minnesota & Wisconsin.) Until I started researching AS, I don't think I had ever heard his name. This site was the first place I saw him mentioned.

I've heard him mentioned in other forums and mailing lists. I am more fascinated with his cousin Sacha.

No, I had never heard of him before I had started looking up specific stuff about AS on the Internet.

lol to be completely honest, I only found out about Simon BC from reading Sacha's wikipedia page. But this was years ago before i strongly suspected that I had AS myself.

Nope. That was the first time I heard of him, when someone here recommended his book.

I think he's quite well-known among people who know a lot about autism.

He's not well-known among the general public by any means, but then, is he in the UK?

I had never heard of him until I came to WP.

He has an amazing amount of talented/gifted people in his family! 8O

That is also true in Britain; his name wouldn't mean anything to you unless you had an interest in pyscology, esp autism.

But like i say, he's always the person they talk for an expert opinion if there's ever a discussion about autism on the radio or in the press. His book the essential difference is also fairly mainstream. He's always introduced as the "world-renowned autism expert" so I was just wandering how world renowned he actually is.

He's been on tv here recently because he was the on who diagnosed Gary McKinnon, the computer hacker who the US want us to extradite and charge with terrorism for hacking into the Pentagon and NASA. SBC is arguing that he shouldn;t be charged on the grounds that he meant no harm and was simply naively pursuing an aspergic obsession.

The english guy running the hacker coverup. He should be charged and extridited, aiding and abeting a terrorist.

Asperger's is never a defense.

This was not done with a Dell, he had higher help, and lots of data was lifted,

This was State Intelligence, and they do not want to explain.

Gary McKinnon has been charged, that cannot be undone with psychobabble, he is a proven felon, and under treaty with the United Kingdom, he needs to be delivered here for trial.

We have other spies doing life, no exceptions, no fronts or fall guys, do the deal we will hunt you down. We want to know who he delivered the information to.

This goes right to the top.

Oh dear, I reckon i'm gonna be opening up an entire new can of worms here but never mind,

I agree that its wrong for Gary McKinnon and SBC to use AS as an excuse for hacking into US state security. If anything, it makes it more difficult for the rest of us to be accepted as functionable members of society if ppl are using asperger's as an excuse for committing crimes.

However, we in Britain do consider it a bit ludicrous that you're charging someone who is essentially a computer nerd who still lives with his mum, with terrorism. All he did was break into NASA and have a bit of fun. As far i'm aware he didn't steal any data and he certainly didn't arrange to sell information on to people.

In USa, most people think simon baron cohen is the guy from the movie borat.

He is well known in circles that have something to do with autism.

The first place I read about him was some popular magazine, maybe newsweek or time. So he's not unheard of, but not as famous as a movie star either.

Then show up for court, see if a jury will convict.

As for where the hacking happened, you don't kick down the front door if you can slip in a window.

Once inside the system it is much easier to move around.

If it is as you say, nothing taken, nothing left, the big question is how, the hole in the system which we want to plug.

Now when someone breaks into the Queen's bedroom, the first question is, how did you get in here?

An Asperger Syndrome Knicker obsession and wanting to know what she wore is not a defense.

He is being charged with Cyber Terrorism, because that is what he did.

It is only one more step to crash the NASA system during a launch, a bit more than a hobby.

NASA runs spy satellites. That is a direct link to NSA.

Nothing less than a full accounting of every keystroke will do.

We put people in jail for running denial of service attacks on private web sites.

Asperger's, living with Mum, being British, still guilty.

Baron-Cohen just became famous in the US, for the Quack Defense.

We have an ongoing murder case, Asperger's was tried by the defense, the Judge rightly ruled that it would not be allowed, the only question is did he murder her. He used a computer and Craigs list to lure her to his house then shot a stranger. Then he got rid of the body. There is a thread here about it.

Everyone here said the Judge did the right thing, Asperger's is no excuse for being a criminal.

The National Security of The United States of America is serious, get him here to answer all questions.
