how many other people here on WP live out in rural areas/out in the sticks, because city or suburban living has just too high a cost of living?

I used to live in the sticks. It is complex. While the cost of living is lower, so is the income. There are hidden cost and challenges as well. You need to drive everywhere and that can add to the costs and time. It can be really peaceful though.

for fixed income people like myself, cities are just unaffordable, everything there costs at least twice as much as it does out here in outer hooterville. groceries in particular are more than twice as expensive, on average.

And the sticks might be a good place for you if you have a fixed income. We even grew our own food. Right now, I moved away because of the income problem, but I really liked living in the country. But even the state I lived in, where in that state made a difference. And if you need medical support, that can be a challenge.

it is in the back of my mind that due to substandard medicare care, one day my moldering corpse will be found in my tin can.

In the UK living out in the sticks seems to be more expensive than living in the cities and larger towns. It seems that they like to lump the average working class and the poor together, while the richer and more advantaged get to live the quiet and private life away from all the noise, crime and pollution.

I wish I lived in the sticks....but my area is okay. Sort of urban-suburban. One mile away it’s almost ghetto, though.

the thing that people who don't live in the sticks need to grok about those who do live in the sticks, is that out here, there is no real culture. it is very barren, just subsistence survival in a relative sense. no fancy stuff out here, just nature.

I suppose I don't really live in neither but a bit of in between. I live in the center of a small town, which is close enough to a big city. I grew up in a farm in the middle of nowhere (or "behind god's back" as locals sometimes called it), but that's too rural for me as an adult since there's no public transportation or even proper grocery stores there and I can't drive due to disability, so I'd be stuck at home and couldn't work, at least not the job I have now. Because of this I have to live in a place that has acces to public transportation and I also prefer to have grocery stores at a walking distance. Having a library that close is nice, too. I couldn't afford to live in the big city, except some areas that are considered bad due to higher crime rates and such, but truth to be told, even if I could afford living in the city center, I would probably choose not to. It'd be handy, yes, but there'd be too many people, including shady ones. Where I live, I can go for a walk at 10 pm if I want to without much care, but I don't think that'd work in the city.

where i live is in the process of being californicated, so it is conceivable, due to increases in local cost of living being bid upwards by the invading hordes, that i will be forced to uproot and move ever further out where it is still affordable.

yes the good old urban corridor, when it comes through your own neighborhood you are absorbed.

the highway about 10 miles away from me, is most of the time, even at night, bumper to bumper traffic. it is noisier out here than it useta be. useta be dead silent most of the time out here. not anymore.

I like Nature. I can get “culture” from the Internet. I can drive a couple of hours, usually, to a place with “culture.”

Sorry about the Californication.

Maybe I don’t understand the disadvantages of the Sticks. I know it’s hard to get a good doctor at a moment’s notice there; whereas Queens is teeming with them.

Where I live, it's cheaper to live in the city. Admittedly, my city is a small one and full of poverty, so that's why. Here, people who have money and want to stay local-ish, move away to someplace less city.

I live in a swampy woods because I prefer it. If I had more money I would live even further out with more land to buffer myself from neighbors.

Being a ways from medical care could be a problem unless one is comfortable with dying.
