just a quick whiz on gimp last night. to those of you who have it what it is sound sensitivity like for you?

Image

dedicated to kingdomofrats :) (feedback is also welcome, but discussion is desirable).

also what sorts of sounds are worst for you?
for me it's loud sounds, but also sounds of mixed pitch (pure tones to a lesser extent, unless they're the really high-pitched whee-ing type, those are pretty bad too).

I love that picture!

btw I don't know if I'm sensitive to sound or not, I used to be but now I don't care too much. Although I do hate people cracking thier joints or wispering none stop drives me mad

multiple sounds. yikes. wah-wah wah wah like auditory vertigo.
sharp high sounds.
motor bikes.
sudden noise causes pain and very pronounced startle response.

sometimes i am going along fine and then SWAMP - all the sounds start coming at me at once. I feel like crying.

some voices can be like knives in my ears.

some days my auditory processing is better than others - like all my sensory stuff.

fluoro lights and too much stimulus from other senses can impact on my hearing.
sharp pains in ears.

now i just wear an ipod most places and i love my music so that really helps.
i also wear earplugs at home a lot now.

I was more sensitive as a child before the chicken pox ate up my right eardrum. I was able to hear dog whistles. Now the sounds that bother me are thunder and motors.

I'm sensitive to multiple types of sounds. But the worst would be:
Loud music or tv
Fingernails across the blackboard type sounds
people's chewing sounds

Thanks Liresse!

Can only describe sound as torture [most sound,-level,pitch,frequency and how much noise have gone through that day also make a difference to it as well],the definition am use is deep painful shockwaves that roll back and forth throughout brain and body, crippling brain in a similar way to how some of own seizures do,the stronger sound gets-the more it mixes up different senses-will become visually impaired [from blurry/messy to completely VI] until recovered from overload,am also get temperary paralysis in both legs because the signals cut off when there's too much overload, should be getting that one a lot less when move to new residential as bedroom is professionally soundproofed.
just bring on old age and deafness.

Anything high pitched or loud usually bothers me. Car alarms, shouting, door bells, can openers, bus engines, fire alarms, etc. I have been able to learn to cope more as I've gotten older, but I still get really sick if the sound is at the right frequency to make me ill . I am also highly touch sensitive. You gave me another idea for a post or two, thanks!

p.s. sorry for typos & misspellings

I don't like these either. Sometimes when I've shared houses I've wondered why people have to have the television volume so high!

I don't like the tinny music sound that leaks out of MP3 players either.

Or dogs barking. And a neighbour here has some birds, and when they get going with tweeting and chirping they really annoy me. Oh, and wind chimes. Back home, a neighbour has some windchimes on his balcony and I can hear them when I'm trying to sleep.

wow u made that!!? thats soo cool, ur soo talented!! ! I have such bad sound sensitivities, carry around noise cancelling headphones wherever i go which are attached to my ipod, have noise cancelling machine in my room, just hate noise haha. It can be anything as simple as somebody coughing, or something as high pitched as a bird squeal, number of different noises bother me, but also depends on the situation, if i'm more calm, more off in my own world, i dont get upset as easily, but most of the time i have my headphones on anyways. I also hate the noise of my vacume, makes me want to shoot myself haha, the noise is unbearable!

thanks everyone for your thoughts! keep them coming! we aspies and auties do not talk much about anything, and sensation/perception is very unique to the individual person, so these insights you are all offering are so valuable!

some specific replies:

- thanks those of you who liked it!

- millie: knives in ears. this is exactly what it feels like for me, only i couldn't think how to describe it. it's a thin, sharp, stabbing pain - knife fits well. most painful noises have at least one knife in at least one of my ears. i also have issues with auditory processing (apd). it's incredible how huge a role the apd plays. i was watching an ad on youtube at a too-loud volume, and then my fiance's phone rang (it has a musical ringtone so goes on for a bit), and i swear i could not have heard a thing on youtube even if i had put my ear on the speaker. (not that i would have wanted to.)

- maditude: ahh... chicken pox! oh dear! although today i was tempted to deliberately deafen myself by listening to 80dB sounds or something. gosh. (the sound of my own voice was hurting my ears. that's pretty annoying.)

- kingdomofrats: the new soundproof residential place sounds awesome - as does the car if you get to have a soundproof one! i am really interested in the way you experience sound sensations, it seems extremely unpleasant. what levels of sounds are you comfortable with? talking, whispering, breathing? footsteps? what about the sounds you make around your residence, do they bother you too? i don't mean to be rude, i am just fascinated by others' experience of sound.

- peko: me too, loud and high pitched is definitely bad. i am not as touch sensitive as i am sound sensitive. i mean, i stim with touch and balance, but an unpleasant touch doesn't worry me as much the same "unpleasantness" of sound. no typos and misspellings! (i don't think i have ever heard a can opener make a sound? maybe i have not seen enough can openers being used, haha.)

- englishlulu: yeah, birds... like crickets... eesh. i have taken some wp-ers' advice to dig up all the patches of weeds within a 3 metre radius of my window, but they must have grown back because the crickets are back again!!

- age: thanks haha, the drawing tablet made it look good!! noise cancelling headphones sounds like something i need to invest in (i guess my problem is i only ever like listening to one song at a time, on repeat, a bit of a waste to get an ipod just for that!). i also get bothered by people coughing. i don't know if it is just my sensitivity but my fiance and my father have annoyingly loud coughs and sneezes, when they look like they're about to do either, i've learnt subconsciously to react by clapping my hands to my ears. yeah, i also find being in my "own world" as in a space that i enjoy being in, helps with sound. noise cancelling machine!! i want one of those!! i guess they are really expensive though.

i also get bothered by being in the kitchen at dinner prep time. a slammed cutlery drawer is like the knives in ears thing. the sound of the tap being turned on in the sink at full blast is also very knives in ears. add to that the continuous roaring of the stove fan and you can imagine i am really struggling to peel the cold, slippery potatoes like i have just been instructed to...
