Howdy, this might sound a bit weird because I'm writing this as it is happening.

Maybe someone on here can give me some insight on this. A friend's father has invited his son and myself to go and meet with a marketing guru tomorrow about two hours from where I live. Now, we have some other important stuff to do tomorrow that was already scheduled. My friend keeps telling me "the guy's a genius, it would help your film marketing etc". I asked a seemingly pertinent question: "Does he do film marketing?" he said "He does theatre and clubs." Apparently he does it all from three laptops and he works in Brazil and he's now moving to Corsica. I really am not interested in marketing but my friend's father is "highly recommending it". I don't really want to go but I am unsure because perhaps I should learn something about that side of the industry just to be aware of it. Yet, it is heaps out of the way. Is my friend just trying to bum a ride to go meet with the person? The guy apparently charges an arm and a leg for consultations and this would be free.

I am really sick of thinking and counter-thinking "If I go, it'll be useless and a waste of time" then seconds later "If i don't go, I'll regret because I will have missed learning the meaning of life." I don't want to think in such extremes any more.

Any constructive suggestions?

what you want constructive, now?

I really can't say. Check your gut instincts.

You said you have alot to do, so is it in your time budget?

Can you cut out some other things?

i agree that if this is your field, then it wouldn't hurt to understand this phase of the industry.

check your gut.

I have no idea what this guy's about, but as a general rule I've found it's better to do something and discover it was a bad idea than to skip it and then wonder.

Within reason, of course. :)

"nothing ventured, nothing gained."

well, that's what i used to say until that fateful day when i inserted a knife in to the toaster.

seriously, from what you've described about the man, it sounds as though he could be useful to you. i think you should take the opportunity.

Well after I wrote that, I kind of was getting pressured by my friend to go and I realised that I wasn't really invited, I was invited by my friend who wanted a lift to see his father and I was more of an afterthought. I have no real interest in marketing. I guess I want to make the product rather than sell it and make money off it. I turned my friend down, citing the fact that "we had more important things to do" and that it would be better to focus on what's at hand.

I'm just sick of switching between extreme polar streams of thought in my head. I mean, it's never just "she'll be right", it's either "the most rewarding thing on Earth and I'll miss it" or "the biggest waste of time on Earth and I got suckered into it". I just want to think about things rationally without exaggerating their proportions.

A lot of times I feel the same way about trying new things- that they will be a waste of time. Then one day I realized that most of the time, I end up sitting on my ass at home anyway. So even in a worst-case scenario, in which the new thing I try IS in fact a total waste, I've lost absolutely nothing, and I don't worry afterwards about what might have been. Once I started to think of it in these terms, it became a lot easier to overcome the initial barrier to accomplishing something.
