how am i supposed to do this? i want to go into child care one day but how can i do this with all my sensory sensitivies
I went to the doctor (ENT) yesterday
while in the waiting room at the doctors office i had an incident
you see there was this little kid who was obviously on the spectrum too (maybe not to the random person but to someoneone who knows about the spectrum and stuff it would be obvious) was running out of the waiting room his mom was following him to bring him back in. this whent on at least once or twice (that i saw) one of the times his mom was carrying him back in then it happened he screeched it wasnt that loud but it was loud enough for me. i got so startled that i had a little mini meltdown, i was flapping, rocking and stuff i think i may have made some noises too my mom had to calm me down.
how can i work with young children if this is going to happen? I mean when you work with kids theres obviously going to be loud sudden noises its part of job descripition
what am i going to do?
I find gradual habituation works wonders. Although kids, with their love of random noises are a little more challenging. Start out as soon as possible with just a little as first. Maybe a good idea would be to try out cds they make for dogs like 'sounds soothing' or 'sounds sociable', their made to get dogs used to general sounds and sounds of kids. Since you can start out at a low volume and work your way up to very loud they might be good as a starting point.
Just every day challenge yourself a little more to put yourself in a situation you find uncomfertable. It won't seem like you make a lot of progress, but a few months down the line your baby steps will have paid off and you'll be able to see progress.
It's easier to deal with discomfort if you're keen on what you're doing and in flow. You just tune the smaller stuff out. (The bigger stuff is still a problem.) So if you really really really want to work with kids, and you feel good when you do it, then I think you can probably learn to tune out the worst of it.
Personally, I like kids' noise, except when someone's getting hurt. I like it when they're obviously having fun. We made lots of noise when we were kids, too (my sibs and I).
