injustice or cruelty? Why do they often say that when THEY are responsible for the unfair conditions being complained about? Why is it so difficult for them to take responsibility for their actions?

It's just part of the human condition ... for a four-year old!

Some people never grow up.

I hate the phrase "life isn't fair" or "that's life", because that's like saying that it's always gonna suck this bad and attempting to make it better is selfish and arrogant. It's like, WTF?!

Exactly! That's equivalent to saying "How dare you have the audacity to question the system?". If no one had attempted to change the world, we wouldn't have progressed further than having many hunter gatherer societies.

Exactly! My mum's always on about how the rules have to be accepted and I'm not in a position to change them, etc, so I asked if she thought Rosa Parks was wrong to disregard segregation laws in favour of equal treatment for everyone. I got told off for being a wise-ass.

Life really isn't fair though, so at times I can understand that. I don't mean like because of rules and whatnot, but life itself is not fair. Life is survival, and nothing is fair about surviving. You either do or you don't.

sorry to rain on this parade (hehe; just another example...) life is NOT fair. get used to it. my dad drilled this into my and my sisters heads when we were kids, and i for one am glad he did.

there's nothing wrong with being upset about life's circumstances, such is life. but to be so overwrought over a circumstance for ever and ever is just not reasonable or realistic.

anyone who tell you life isnt fair is doing you a favor, that is, if you accept the favor. our society is so based on instant gratification and me-ism, that when life deals us a bad hand, we are so astonished that we could not possibly get every one and every thing we want out of life; but no one can.

and i bet your dillemma is small potatos compard to serious life events that really make life unfair.

im glad my dad taught me this lesson. it gave me empowerement over my feelings and thoughts.

if anybody really thinks life is fair, i have a bridge to sell; interested?>

mike

Sometimes life genuinely isn't fair and it's out of our control. But sometimes it CAN be changed, and the phrase becomes a defeatist attitude.

Life is not about being fair. It's about getting away with whatever you can!

also; you can't make people take responsibility for their actions; but if you let it affect you too much, they are manipulating you, and much worse, you are allowing them to do so. why even challenge someone to do so? so you can get in a pissing match? you'll both end up getting wet.

ive met a lot of characters; the goofy ones i just leave them be. they are either not all there, or else they are looking to instigate something. the best reaction in these circumstances is no reaction at all.

then they can sit there and go crazy wondering what you really think. mmm now, isn't that the best way to deal with the major douche bags?

silence is golden!

Ditto. Life is not fair; only the strong (physically or intellectually) survive. You want your situation changed, change it yourself - but be prepared to live with whatever consequences you set in motion.

'Life is not fair' is a phrase almost exclusively reserved for people who are whining because they expected something to be handed to them freely and easily and who are shocked and dismayed that it wasn't.

I have no idea why people use that expression. It sounds depressing when it's just left at that, though. I don't see why the Rosa Parks question wasn't just answered, though. If I make "smartass" questions, I actually expect an answer.

I've come to the conclusion that life is fair and we get exactly what we "deserve." (Although, I don't believe that anyone naturally deserves anything, so it's hard to put into words what I mean.) I won't go into deep explanation here, but it's part of my personal philosophy.

Exactly, it's not like I said it just to piss her off. And I don't see how being smart can be a bad thing, anyway. What's up with that?! :?

For most people who believe that "Life isn't fair" it actually seems to mean, "I didn't get what I wanted."

Ugh this pisses me off so much, my mom used to say this to me all the time!! She would make some kind of descision about my life and I'd say "But that's not fair!!" and she would respond "Well, tough. Life isn't fair."

WTF?? Sure life isn't fair sometimes but I don't understand why you wouldn't try to do everything within your power to make sure it's as fair as it can be???
