I've never sat in a British car either now that I think of it. I love the look of the Delorean, and it had great potential. John Delorean was head of General Motor's Pontiac division. He was responsible for giving cool names to the whole product line ( ThunderChief and Star Chief became Bonneville and Grand Prix). He designed the Firebird and broke GM rules by installing an oversize engine in a midsize car to make the GTO.
When Pontiac started designing the Fiero, he realized that because it had 2 seats the American public would assume it to be a sports car. GM executives insisted it was to be a commuter car. Just something to get a guy and his briefcase to work. Delorean saw the potential and wanted it to have gullwing doors (for easy entry/exit in tight parking spaces), a mid-mounted V8 or at least the 270hp version of the Pontiac 4cyl, and it should be stainless steel instead of plastic (sound familiar). Pontiac said no. Delorean said "Do it my way or I quit", and Pontiac said "See ya!". When your top engineer says the car should be built this way, you really ought to listen.
The Fiero was a dud. Universally criticized for being slow, handling poorly, and problems with the plastic body work not holding up. It also takes a gymnast to get in and out of.
Delorean took his toys and built his own sandbox. Unfortunately, he didn't have quite the R&D budget of pontiac. He was forced to use a notoriously flimsy Lotus chassis which required him to mount the heavy and anemic Ford V6 behind the rear wheels (Deloreans can do awesome wheelies
). There were also some quality problems (especially electrical
). Then the US Drug Enforcement Agency entrapped him in a bogus drug deal and the whole deal came down. But dam* it is a good looking car!
