This is a difficult one, because the autistic community [and the disabled community overall] commonly argues against 'person with..' use,and to see an Autie or Aspie as a human/person before the autism/aspergers,would mean the need for 'person with...',though thats if want to reach the general, unaware public,as will find people who are well experienced with spectrumers, couldn't care less what word is used, they will always see us as human.
It also takes respect, and it would help a lot if they stopped pitying us,and started understanding, pitying does not breed respect, how often does anyone else here who gets pity off the general public for being autistic get respect from them? how often do they attempt to interact with the autist, and not their family/carer/support staff/whoever else they're with?
There needs to be understanding for all of us on the spectrum,no automatic assumptions.
They need to stop assuming those of us on the severe end of the spectrum are all severely mentally ret@rded,incapable of communicating and cannot do things such as use a computer, and stop assuming aspies/HFAs/spectrumers are fully able to do everything.
Judge an Autist individually, not on their label.
People need to see all sides of the spectrum, including those who are borderline NT/ASD,right down to the most profoundly affected, and equal respect needs to be given.
This not only needs to come from the general public but from both the autistic and autism communities themselves.
Celebrate skills and strengths of all on the spectrum [a skill may be dressing themselves for one autist, for another it may be writing a book],and make aware the need of specialist support which is extremely lacking for adults, the lack of specialist residential homes and the lack of suitable supported housing all over the world for autists, the world needs to put more funding into supporting those who already have ASDs.
Regular tv adverts from autism charities would be good, more programmes on autism made [they still show ones made years ago, more new stuff needed!].

The way to change the world is through activism. You might want to check out organizations like the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network for ideas about what you can do: http://www.autisticadvocacy.org/
