glider18's "You Might As Well Laugh"
I know that autism can give us wonderful gifts, eccentric ways of thinking, and challenges too, but it can also give us some laughs. I once heard the comical speaker Carl Hurley, "The World's Funniest Professor," at a teacher's seminar, and his message on life is this, "No matter how bad things seem to get, you might as well laugh." So, lets take a look at some of the not so disturbing challenges in our autistic lives and...laugh . I will start with a few.
I was at a food bar and I was dipping onto my plate a couple large spoonfuls of what I thought was banana pudding. I wish you could have seen my face when I took a large spoonful of it at my table. It was mayonnaise!! ! .
One time I kept noting that my left eye was mattering up. I kept rubbing it trying to clear it up, but it stayed fuzzy looking. This went on for some time before I realized what had actually happened---my left lens had fallen out of my glasses .
When I first started dating the woman who became my wife, I wanted a movie to take to her house since she said her mom and dad wanted to watch a movie with us. So I went to the local video rental store, and the man who owned the place decided to play a little trick on me after I asked his advice on a suitable movie to watch with my girlfriend's family. Well...no more than a couple minutes into the film, here is this scene of a naked man lying on top of a bed. I felt like crawling under her parent's couch .
And today, as I was getting my lunch in the cafeteria, I promptly stuck my hand in the applesauce as I was reaching to pick up the tray .

Although I have no idea what the situations have got to do with autism except the next to last/is you#re a clumsy person with AS then the last two, they're pretty funny anyway.

The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it. Terry Pratchett
Yeah, my son's mother and I have taken to mocking some of the traits, with no self-esteem lost on my part. Humor is one of the few ways we are able to transcend the complicated mess that our lives currently are. Asperger's Syndrome is but one of the many root causes of this.
When I've (yet again) gone off on some utterly random, context-less, inconsequential monologue... she will start shaking her head and (with deliberate sarcasm and mirth) say things like, "FREAK!" and "What planet are you from???"
When I've (yet again) started to meltdown and panic over a trivial situation... she will mockingly sympathize with something like, "oh my god! IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD! Yes, let's FREAK OUT here...etc." And then I start to realize what I had been doing, and calm down.
There are many other examples of stuff like this. Like I said, making fun of it has really become the only way to deal with it. God damn human beings are strange

I am glad you can see the humor too Acacia. It is a good way to deal with our lives.
There is something else I forgot to add with the banana pudding/mayo incident. Beside that container was what I thought was chocolate pudding. I got it too---and it turned out to be some dark-reddish salad dressing, or something.
Sora wonders what these things have to do with autism. Well, yes, clumsiness with sticking my hand in the applesauce. With the puddings? My mind somehow processed them as pudding even though they were next to the salad items. My narrow intense appetite was thinking of sweets instead. With the movie rental---I was a good target for the video shop owner. He knew me. And he obviously knew I was a good target for his humor. I interpreted his recommendation as serious when it was probably laced with something I didn't understand. I took him literally when buying into his suggestion. With the glasses lens falling out---that could probably easily happen to anyone.

My humorous incidents are mostly word type incidents.
The most recent one I remember is what I had volunteered to drive a bus for an all night christian youth event. I was in the room with my fellow drivers and one of them asked me if I was born again. My response was "Nope, I am just a driver."
