I'm diagnosed Dyspraxia and Dyslexia and the psychologist said I showed signs of Autism; do you recon it's worth me getting a diagnosis or do you recon a self-diagnosis of AS is good enough? My parents tell me there is nothing in getting a diagnosis because it changes absolutly nothing, as I've already been through the schooling system and graduate next year and so they say it will yield few benefits. Are there any benefits to getting a dianosis now or is it really not worth it?

Also I've been told that there is alot of overlap between dyspraxia and autism-like traits and so is it possible for me to not have AS at all and all my autie traits be the result of my dyspraxia? The reason I ask is that people who I've spoken to have said that when they speak to me AS doesn't automatically spring to mind until I actually tell them abit about myself. But then again my two best friends are on the spectrum and if I wasn't told then I wouldn't have realised.

Basically does this yes or no read like an AS or HFA profile:

*Had no friends up until highschool because I liked to play alone and am still rather fond of my own company these days.
*was accused by almost every individual i've ever met of being rude/inappropriate/hurtful, but seriously don't always understand what I've done wrong-I'm hoping expirence will teach me.
*I understand puns etc as I'm a writer. Writing has been one of my major obessions along with dogs since I was about 6. managed to learn 1000s of breeds, all the groups etc.
*Some say I'm overly organised. I have lists for absolutly everything. Put everything in alphabetical order etc.
*when I was little I never played the way other kids do, I repeated the same story with my toys everyday and then spent hours linning all my toys up, forcing my siblings to do maths and english sheets which i'd made and I'd mark them.
*Problems with Auditory processing.
*And right now I'm stimming like mad, lol

didn't include everything as I didn't want to bore you too much, but yeah, what do you think?

(Sorry for the long post :))

i've got the same situation the other way round, i have an atypical autism diagnosis, but was wondering whether to get a dyspraxia diagnosis too. I've been told similar to you, it won't be worth it because it won't change anything. I already get as much support and benefits from the autism diagnosis as I'd be able to get. It' just that, for me, I'd really like to know for sure as there seem to be a lot of difficulties i have that other people i know with AS/HFA don't have.

yes many of those things sound like AS and are over and above what dyspraxia would be on its own. i get the auditory processing problems myself and i am the stimming world champion  i had friends at school, but went off and played by myself anyway rather than play with them.

Seems like it might have some use, just in the sorting out sense... this is this and that is that.

I always like to know just where things stand, myself.
