Am I the only one here who hates hearing this phrase? Everything happens in life but it bugs me when people say certain things aren't life even though they do happen in life such as death and so far couple people online told me, that's not life, it's death. Well telling someone "that's life" sounds so cold hearted to me and you don't give a s**t about them so therefore would they say it to someone who loses their loved one? After all it is life because it happens in life. But I still wouldn't say those two words to anyone since I don't like them being said to me. Maybe to a**holes only since I don't care about them but not to anyone else.

"I got beat up in school today by a bully"
"That's life, get used to it."

"I got arrested for something I didn't do."
"That's life, quit telling me about your false arrest."

"My grandfather died."
"That's life, everyone dies eventually of old age."

"I'm being cyber bullied."
"Shut up that's life, get used to it."

I was having a discussion with a friend today about everybody saying, "Oh, because the economy is so bad..." and how absurd it can be at times. It's one of those phrases that assumes knowledge about it, but it can totally be plastered on everything related to the economy.

"That's life" is really just a cliche cop-out phrase. No one actually holds it to heart when they're saying it, but damn if it isn't easy to say.

Personally, I wouldn't like that phrase being used at me either, to me it also denotes a lack of caring. If a person said to me 'that's life' after a death of someone I cared about, I'd not talk to them again if I could because they would have been telling me (in my view) that they didn't care about me/my pain etc. I would probably explain this to them and walk away from them.

Though, this is just my view, it may be shared by others but this view is mine too. :)

I get pissed off by that phrase. It devalues things.

'I got all my molars knocked out by a bully.' 'That's life, deal with it.'

Actually, it's not. You have a right to your molars. Sure, life is hard for everyone, but it doesn't mean you are obliged to lie down and take crap.

I had an online friend who was always saying that to me and it always hurt. I got real close to dumping him a few times and when I finally told him how those two words make me feel, he stopped. I didn't think he care but he surprised me.

It would be funny if that phrase was now used as the new excuse for why things suck:

"I got beat up in school today by a bully"
"Oh, because the economy is so bad..."

"I got arrested for something I didn't do."
"Oh, because the economy is so bad..."

"My grandfather died."
"Oh, because the economy is so bad..."

"I'm being cyber bullied."
"Oh, because the economy is so bad..."

Lol.

"My farts reek."

"It's because the economy's so bad. The food you're eating is making your farts worse."

"It's raining."

"It's because the economy's so bad. The sun doesn't have enough money to come out."

:)

I've always hated "that's life" too. That was one of my mom's favorites. Granted I did whine a lot as a kid, but that didn't make hearing "that's life" any less annoying.

As annoying as "that's life" might be, it doesn't even come close to the level of annoyance and aggrivation the phrase "because I said so" finds itself in. I absolutely hate when someone says this as if it's supposed to classify as a reason or insentive, it means nothing and is just an extremely condescending way to indicate that your oppinions are worth more than mine.

I hated it when I was a child, I hated it when I was a teenager, I hate it now and I will always hate that phrase. No other words inspire rage as much as "because I said so".

I find "That's Tao" to be my self-reminder when things do not go as I expect or desire... things have their own path, and despite my navigation there are no guarantees on the destination. But it isn't a universal adapter; some things tear at the fabric of ourselves and need attention.

I don't hate that phrase because the things it's in response to, they ARE life.

I hate hearing that phrase. It is a slap in the face.
Of course it is life. Everything that happens to anyone, is life.
It's trite and its not profound at all.
It usually means: "I don't care about you or your problem but I am too much of a coward to tell that to your face."
But not always... sometimes people are just clumsy with their words... some times they mean well... but they just don't know what else to say.
I guess that is why when I hear someone tell of a bad time I say. "That's rough." and I try to recognize that what they are going through IS rough.
Yeah it's life. But life can be rough some times... and when it's rough it's nice to know that some one cares enough to see it...
*hug*

I hate that catch phrase.

The receptionist on the phone didn't understand my accent.

Person without an accent - "That's life!"

Teenagers think I'm Mentally Challenged.

Typical NT - "That's life!"

I have an intense fear of heights.

Rock climber - "That's life!"

Yeah, and here's the reason for that: because no one considers the how and the why; it's just accepted verbatim.

In fact, that's the reason most easily solvable problems of humanity go unsolven; just no one cares what the underlying problem behind it is.

However, do accept "that's life" as basically "humans are f*cking idiots, who want to continue doing stupid things"...which is totally true. So in a way, yeah, "that's life". The best thing you can do is make life better for yourself.

No matter how much everyone wants to help out other people, the other people have to want themselves first.

And for those emotional types, be careful with what I'm about to say, as you'll probably hate me forever if you don't:

Those folks in Somalia who bathe/drink in water that goats sh*t in...well, apparently they have no problems doing it, since they apparently have no desire to improve their situations. In a sick way, they must enjoy it. So, yeah, "that's life"!

Welcome to humanity!
