Remember those Choose Your Own Adventure books of the 80s? Let’s try to write one here, using post numbers instead of page numbers.

For every post, you must check the thread to see which choice leads to it. Then continue the story from that point, and then post two or three choices along with what post to turn to.

Or maybe you’ll find that no previous choice leads to your post. In that case, you may write something random, along with two or three choices as usual. Then we have to try to work that into the story somehow.

If you’re still confused, an example can be found here: http://brokenforum.com/index.php?thread ... brony.775/

Rules:

- Since there are no post numbers on here, you MUST write the post number at the start of each post. So if the last post was post 14, you write 15 at the start of your post.

- Don’t post unrelated posts. If you have any questions or comments, PM me, or post them at the beginning of your post.

- Try not to refer to posts that are really far ahead of the post you’re writing. So if this is post 5, don’t give post 73 as a choice, for example.

- You may include anything in the story—elves, Pokemon, time travel, you name it. But try not to make choices that are only understandable to those who are fans of a certain franchise or who have specialized technical knowledge in a certain area. Keep it accessible.

- You may refer back to earlier posts in the story. Just make sure it makes sense. Don’t make a choice lead to a certain post if that post doesn’t follow logically from that choice.

- Be careful not to refer to posts that have already been referred to in previous choices, unless you’re doing it deliberately and it makes sense.

- Where applicable, you may direct the reader straight to a certain post instead of offering a choice.

- You may put deaths anywhere you want, but try not to have toooo many of them. Especially, make sure that not every possible ending of the story is a death. Leave room for people to continue the story.

- Posts may be as short or as long as you want.

- If you can, consider editing your choices to put links to the post to go to.

- Have fun!

(I said “post” too many times…)

You just moved into your grandmother’s house. It’s a fairly typical old house, with cobwebby corners and old-fashioned flowery wallpaper. But there’s one strange thing. Before she died, you grandmother left an extra note in her will. “Whoever moves into this house, DO NOT move the bookshelf in the upper left bedroom.”

You figure there’s something dangerous behind that bookshelf, and you know you should stay away. But being the adventurous sort you are, you can’t help but be curious. Which is why you’re standing in the bedroom, staring up at the bookshelf full of dusty old books.

You push on the bookshelf. Maybe you can’t move it. That would put an end to your dilemma, at least for now. But when you push hard, it budges a little.

A part of you thrills. The smarter part of your brain is telling you, “Don’t. Stop.” But you grit your teeth and keep pushing, harder and harder, until you’re huffing and puffing. And with considerable effort, you shove the bookshelf away to reveal an ordinary-looking white door.

You stand there for a minute, panting and sweating, and then thrust open the door. Behind it is a long, dark hallway. Cool! A secret passage! You tiptoe through, boards creaking underfoot, until you reach another door.

You stare at the door. You still have a chance to turn back and forget it exists. But the adventurous part of you won’t let you. You tug on the door.

Nothing happens. You tug harder. Still nothing happens. It must be locked. That puts a stop to your adventure. You know you should be relieved, but disappointment tugs on your stomach.

Gritting your teeth again, you lean back and yank on the door handle. It bursts open, and blinding light hits you.

Once your eyes adjust, you look around you, eyes wide and heart pounding. To your left, you see a forest of twisting trees with bright red and blue leaves. To your right is a path through hilly terrain. On a hill far away, you see a huge purple castle, sparkling in the sunlight.

If you venture into the forest, go to post 2.
If you start toward the castle, go to post 4.

Nervous but excited you venture into the forest. The path you walk is covered in reddish clay dust. Beautiful evergreen trees on either side, a strangely purplish sky above you. Enchanting to the eye.

You hear a waterfall in the distance ahead.

As much as you'd like to stop and admire the view, you've got an adventure to go on!

However, you are nervous by the idea of venturing through the forest and part of you prefers the idea of visiting the castle instead.

To continue through the forest turn to post 3.
To turn back and enter the castle instead turn to post 4.

You creep on through the forest, and soon notice a number of strange creatures. There are blue things that have beaks like birds, but they have no wings, and they use their feet to crawl around the ground and scurry up trees. Then there are furry brown animals that resemble tiny bears, but they have wings and fly in and out of the trees. You look around, fascinated, wanting to take in everything.

Then another creature emerges from a large hole in one of the trees. It comes up to your waist, and has bright orange skin and huge ears that stick out. It's dressed in red and blue clothes that you realize are made from tree leaves. Its most frightening feature are two long, sharp fangs protruding from its mouth.

Is this guy friendly, or not?

If you talk to the creature, turn to post 6.
If you hide from it, turn to post 8.

Approaching the castle you cross a moat to a castle gate. It all looks like your rather standard stereotypical medieval castle... nothing unusual and at the gate there are two knights. You can't see their faces, their faces are covered fully by their helmets. They wear silver armor and have a red feather at the back of their helmets. They look identical in size and shape.

Extremely nervously you say "Hi"

In unison they respond:

"You may enter and you are very welcome. I'm Ben and this is Ben." in exactly the same very polite, well spoken and what sounds like an upper class British voice.

"Are these guys for real?!" you think to yourself "Are they human or robot? Are they twins or clones?"

Something doesn't seem right although they seem friendly.

What to do???

You feel freaked out but you also feel very welcomed by the knights if anything on the surface is to go by.

It all seems rather surreal.

To say nothing and proceed through the castle gate turn to post 5.
To talk to the knights first turn to post 7.
To turn back and go to the forest instead turn to post 2.

You enter the foyer of the castle. It's beautiful. The floor is purple and covered with sparkling gold rugs. Elaborate purple tapestries hang on the wall alongside portraits of serious-looking old men. Gold staircases spiral up above you.

A beautiful girl in a long purple dress walks up to you. "Hello," she says in a robotic voice, like that of the knights'. "I am Princess Amethyst. Welcome to the Kingdom of Amethystia."

You curtsy to her while studying her. She's definitely conventionally gorgeous. Wavy blonde hair tumbles down her back. Her blue eyes sparkle, her lips are as red as cherries, and her skin is flawless. But there's something...plastic about her that makes her not so appealing.

"I will take you to your room." The Princess grabs you by the hand. Her grip is strong enough that it feels like your bones are breaking, and her hands are ice-cold.

"But..." you begin.

The Princess cuts you off. "I will take you to your room," she says again.

Then, with surprising strength, she drags you across the floor to one of the staircases.

If you go with the Princess, turn to post 10.
If you break free from her grip, turn to post 11.

"Hel--"

Before you can say "hello" to the creature it sinks its fangs into your neck.

Four days later you wake up in the night. It's absolute pitch black and the wildlife looks very different. It's all very spooky.

You feel incredibly thirsty, incredibly strong and muscular. You're very tall and very hungry. You feel extremely emotionally calm but you have a primal thirst for... for... blood.

The creature that bit you is gone.

A strange green floating portal is behind you. It is somewhat transparent and through it you can see your human body on the floor, unconscious.

To go off into the night hunting turn to post 9.
To enter the portal and return to your human body turn to post 12.

"So where are we?" you ask the knights.

"You are in the Kingdom of Amethystia," says the first Ben, in that same robotic voice.

"Which is ruled by the beautiful and honourable Princess Amethyst," adds the second Ben.

"Who is really a..." Ben #1 starts to put in, but then Ben #2 reaches over and smacks him in the mouth with his armoured hand.

"Well, can I at least warn the human?"

"No. If you do not stop, I will tell the Princess, and you will have your head lopped off."

"Can I at least tell them not to eat any purple pears?"

"No..." Ben #2 begins, and then stopped. "Oh. You just did." He looks at you. "But do not tell the Princess he told you this, or we will both have our heads lopped off."

Heads lopped off? That sounds scary!

If you still want to enter the castle, turn to post 5.
You see a village a little ways away from the castle. If you'd rather go into the village, turn to post 14.

You hide behind a nearby bush. The creature looked like it had fast reactions but luckily it didn't spot you sneaking behind the bush. It must be easily distracted.

"I can smell you. And yes I speak English."

You hear the creature say in a booming voice.

It looked strangely cute, despite the vicious fangs, how surprising that the creature sounds so intimidating with a big deep booming voice.

Of course, you think this very briefly because your thoughts are predominantly swamped with a quickly creeping feeling of intense dread. The creature says it can smell you!

The creature walks close up to the bush.

"Oh no!" you think to yourself in panic, "The creature can smell me and it's about to get me!"

In panic you run out from the bush and the creature chases after you. You got a head start but it's so much faster than you.

The creature is just about to close in on you when it trips on a log, rolls down a hill and falls off a cliff. As it's falling you hear the creature scream "This won't hurt one bit I'm incredibly strong! And I'll get you!" in its booming voice.

The creature lands with a thud by some rocks near a river below. It doesn't make a sound of pain at all and gets up to stand immediately.

"Ha! I told you it wouldn't hurt one bit! I'm coming up to GET you!" the creature shouts up at you from below.

Suddenly the creature trips on a rock and falls into a cave on the rock surface on the side of the cliff below.

"Ha! I may be clumsy but this ain't a probl--" you hear the creature shout up at you but before it can finish the word "problem" there is a massive avalanche from rocks at the top of the cliff and they fall down into the cave blocking it in. You hear a muffled very loud scream of "Arggggh! I'm trapped! Even I can't shift this stuff" from the trapped creature.

"Wow clumsy indeed! What a clumsy creature!" you say out loud in shock and surprise, crouched on one knee, as you bring yourself to a full standing position:

The floor up above beneath you shook as the avalanche happened and you landed on your bottom with a light thud. Ouch. Sure to only be a light bruise.

This forest is scary. But how lucky you were to escape from the creature, maybe your good luck will continue, and besides, forest adventures are fun!

Strangely, you notice what appear to be steps, as if made by a person, leading down the other half of the cliff where the rocks are more stable and safe. Surely it's safe to go down there? And the creature down there can't possibly break out, right? How much of a daredevil are you?

To continue through the forest turn to post 13.
To descend the cliff using the steps turn to post 15.

You stalk through the night, thirst for blood seeping into your every pore. Your eyes shift left and right and up and down, looking for animals. But the furry flying creatures fly away and the walking birds skitter up the trees.

You manage to grab hold of a smaller walking bird on its way up a tree. You hold it up, grinning cruelly and imagining how good its blood will taste.

"No! Don't!" it whimpers.

You feel a niggling at the back of your head, and you recognize it as your human conscience. Before, you never would have hurt an animal. But you really are thirsty.

If you sink your fangs into the creature, turn to post 21.
If you put it down, turn to post 22.

The princess continues to drag you over to your room.

You can take it no more.

"Ouch! Will you please LET GO of me I am perfectly capable of having you escort me there!" You say.

The princess responds: "Such a temper! You're lucky I'm a very sweet and forgiving princess. However you are also lucky I don't have your head lopped off for that. I understand you were in pain and it caused you much frustration. Very well then, I shall escort you there but you must behave yourself and there will be no more of that temper. Do it again and I'll have your head lopped off for my amusement. And don't you think that your life is worth more than my amusement. It isn't. I'm perfect and you're not. You're just a person."

"Phew, spare my the lecture!" you thought to yourself. You struggled to not say it aloud but the fear of having your head lopped of made you restrain yourself.

There are no read options when a princess is escorting you and anything out of line will have your head lopped off.

So turn to post 16.

You wrench away from the Princess. You race for the door, but she blocks your path. You sprint down a side corridor.

"You won't get away with this, you puny twerp," she hisses. You glance back and see that, although she looks as pretty as ever, her brows are furrowed in an evil glare. Her fists are up, ready to fight.

You've done some karate. But can you take her on? There's a stone staircase leading down on your right. Maybe you should just keep running.

If you fight the Princess, turn to post 24.
If you run down the stairs, turn to post 25.

You enter the portal.

Standing up from your body, with a bit of a headache, you feel fully human and normal... just a little regret of having get yourself into this situation in the first place.

You tell yourself you want to go home and forget all about this stressful adventure.

But that's just a little part of you telling yourself that, a much bigger part of you is like "Hey, I'm on a good luck streak! Yay! I got away safely and now I want to continue my adventure! Adventures are awesome. I feel unstoppable right now."

But are you feeling very confident or are you feeling very overconfident?

You see a fork in the path a head. Left or right.

Both paths look the same and are symmetrical. Who knows where left leads. Who knows where right reads. You have no idea who knows and you certainly don't know.

To go left, turn to post 17.
To go right, turn to post 18.

You trudge on through the forest. Pretty soon, you start to notice a change. You see more and more places where trees are cut down, or stripped of their bark, leaves and branches, until only empty shells remain. You still see the strange creatures, but most of the flying bears are missing their fur, and the walking birds are missing their feathers, so they look cold and miserable.

Suddenly, you hear a squeaky voice. You look and see a hairless flying bear look up at you. It squeaks again, and you understand what it's saying this time--"Hi!"

"Hi," you say, hoping this creature is friendlier than the last one.

"What's your name?" it asks you. "I'm Orsie."

You tell it, and then ask, "So what is this place?"

"The Kingdom of Amethystia," Orsie says. "It's a parallel world, accessible to Earthlings only by a select few portals."

"Wow," you say. "And what kinds of animals are you, and the walking birds?"

"We're Brunats. The walking birds are Oipeds."

"And why are some of you missing your fur and feathers?"

Orsie shakes its head. "It's a long, sad story."

"Tell me!" you exclaim.

"Okay. For many, many years, Amethystia was a peaceful and happy place, ruled by noble and caring kings and queens who provided for everyone in the village and in the forest. We all lived in harmony and cared for each other. None of us knew the word "evil" , or knew of its existence.

"But one day a mysterious, handsome stranger in dark clothes entered the kingdom. We animals were all a little suspicious of him--he had a strange arrogance to his manner. But he seduced Queen Amethyst, and fell in love with her. As soon as they'd had a child, he killed her, and seized power for himself.

"Within weeks, things started to change. This new King was greedy and hateful. He kept all the riches for himself, leaving the villagers in poverty. He used magic to brainwash the castle workers and keep them obedient. Us forest creatures didn't fare any better. He ruthlessly cut down trees for his own selfish purposes, leaving food scarce. He threatened to destroy the entire forest if we protested. Strange blood-sucking creatures sprung out out of nowhere, leaving us in a state of perpetual danger. And if we get bitten, we turn into one, so we're not safe even from our own kind."

You nod, thinking of the orange creature you saw.

"His daughter was completely like her father, and not at all like her mother. At the age of twelve, she killed her father to rule the kingdom herself. Princess Amethyst is greedy and vain. She shaved off our fur and plucked out the Oipeds' feathers, to make new fashions for her closet. That means many of us die in the winter, as it's so cold. Of course, she left the outside of the forest untainted, to give a good impression to villagers and visitors, and she lets the creatures who suck up to her live there. For the rest of us, life is near-constant pain and misery."

"I'm sorry," you say quietly, your words seeming so inadequate.

"Thank you. You know, we've been waiting for someone like you to come along; someone young, with courage and honour. I believe you can defeat the princess and save us."

"Oh, I don't know." You don't know if you're up to such a momentous task. "How would I do that?"

"Past the forest, past a river and past a mountain, there lives a wizard, who owns a vast supply of magical items. You may be able to get something helpful from him. I must warn you, though, it is a long and dangerous journey. You may prefer to go directly to the castle."

If you want to go in search of the wizard, turn to post 27.
If you'd rather go straight to the castle, turn to post 29.

The village looks rather humble and homely.

There is a path.

Walking down the path you see a man poking his head out of a window of a hut.

The man in the hut, poking his head out of the window, tells you "come on! It ain't so bad, come on in, join in, *hic*"

... hiccups from a drunkard... do you really want to enter? Well... he seems friendly enough

To enter the inn turn to page 19
To not enter the inn... and instead stay where you are or later go somewhere else turn to post 20

You decide to descend the cliff using the steps. All seems calm, though you can’t shake the feeling that something bad is going to happen. A few minutes after your descent, a thick fog begins rolling in. You notice that you’re more than half-way to the bottom, so going back up would be too dangerous, and staying put until the fog disappears would be too boring! You immediately go to the side of the stairs furthest from the edge, hoping that you can feel your way down the mountain. For extra safety, you decide to get down on your butt while climbing down the steps, just like you used to do when you were younger.

'These stone steps feel so cold!' you think to yourself.

Suddenly, you feel a slight tremor. You immediately sit still, but the steps shake so much, that you begin somersaulting forward… right off the edge of the staircase.

"AAAAAAAAA!" You scream until you hit the ground…

You wake up with a sweat. It was all just a dream, but it still felt so real. Just out of curiosity, you decide to go up to the upper left bedroom and notice that the bookshelf was back in its original position. You feel a sense of relief that your near-death experience never really happened, and yet a part of you is just pining for another adventure…

The beginning?

Go back to post 1.
