~On the carrier~

Commander Nord starts fiddling with the control panel more. "There we go." he says, "I've disabled much of your frontal lobe's ability to properly reason, fight your instincts, and most importantly to decieve. Now, why did the wormhole chamber draw 3 gigawatts of power after you left?" Mason thinks, I could say... uhhh... that... ... As hard as he tried he couldn't think of anything else. Nord impatiently says, "Well? Why is it. Spit it out." Mason remains silent.

"You don't fear me very much, do you. You do realize that I can very literally and directly mess with your mind from here, right? Let me fix that, more fear right coming right up." Suddenly Mason is hit with the strongest wave of fear he has ever felt in his life, as powerful as he imagined it might be if he were about to die. His heart rate and breathing rate jumped up incredibly high and he yells "What are you doing? Stop it! Get me out of here!" as he struggles against his restraints. Nord says "Ahh, much better. I can make it stop any time, just answer the question." Mason desperately says the only answer he can give, "Mike came through, I set it up." Nord replies, "Good, what did he bring with him?" Mason responds, "Some people from other universes with strange powers and creatures." Nord: "Why?" Mason: "To take back the station." Nord: "How could we stop them?" Mason: "I don't know!"

Nord stops the machine from artificially creating fear in Mason's mind and Mason lets out a sign of relief. "That's the spirit." says Nord, "This thing still has a lot more fun buttons to push and I still have a lot that I need to know." Mason starts repeating "I don't know. I don't know. I don't know." repeatedly under his breath as if trying to memorize it.

Suddenly a voice resounded throughout the room.
No, Keith, my name is Umbria.

Gristle's eyes widened.
He blinked several times at the Eevee before opening his mouth slowly. "...Umbria?"

The Eevee twitched its ears impatiently. Yes, you moron. It's me, your dog.
The Eevee sat down and scratched at her side with one of her hind-paws. Currently I lack the faculties for speech, so unfortunately this is my only method of communication.

"WHAT THE ACTUAL WHAT HOW CAN THAT EEVEE TALK! I mean, Riku can talk to me telepathically and I think all Pokemon can talk normally but it makes them really tired... BUT THAT EEVEE SEEMS COMPLETELY UN-TIRED!! ! HOW???" Laura was jumping up and down exitedly, hoping that this cute little 'Umbria' Eevee could teach her Pokemon how to talk.

"Fascinating." Jian commented dryly.
"In our world, everything talks!" Aelkai exclaimed, looking quite happy about that fact for whatever reason.

"All pokemon can use language?" Guinan wondered aloud.

"So, how are we going to get into the carrier? Does Sam have entry codes or something, or do we have to try to break in?" Guinan asked a moment later.

(OOC: The brain-scrambling technology is a good twist.)

[For some reason that scene with Mason highly reminds me of the Matrix.]

The Eevee looked around at everyone and bowed her head.
Pleased to meet you all, my name is Umbria. But you can just call me Bree. she said.
She gestured toward Gristle with her ear. This a**hole is my master... or rather used to be.

"What are you doing here?" Gristle asked. He sounded perplexed but there was a bitter edge to his voice.

The Eevee stuck its nose in the air, sniffing delicately.
I followed you. You were highly intoxicated. she said matter-of-factly.

Gristle looked around uneasily. This was not a conversation he wanted to be having in front of everybody.
"Uhm... why were you even there?"

Oh, just wanted to make sure you were okay. she snipped.
She looked at Gristle, her eyes dead set on his. ....Why don't you talk to us anymore?

Gristle was silent.

...Yeah, maybe you should quit partying and come home once in a while.
Umbria thumped her tail on the ground impatiently.
Or better yet, get a job. Go finish school, ya bum.
Do something with your life other than being a deadbeat.

Gristle's eyes were hurt. He didn't see anything for a long time, but finally he looked at Umbria and said,
"...Who are you to call me that?"

Oh. Those aren't my words. Umbria shrugged. She twitched her ears. But I think you know whose they are.

^[Hmm...Is Umbria a Tsundere? ]

"Kitty?" Karion suddenly murmured in a low, rasping, barely audible voice, and wiggled out of Oeuyia's arms to chase Umbria all around the catwalk.

[Catwalk? Did I just make a pun? ]

Gristle's face was deadpan.
"Lemme guess. Sis sent you."

Umbria's face registered nothing for a few seconds, as she stood there processing that phrase.
Then her jaw fell completely slack, and she stared at Gristle with what could only be called a look of blank surprise.
H--h-how did you know?

"Agh.." Gristle rolled his eyes, though his smile betrayed a certain fondness. "'Cause you're both too smart for your own good."

"Whoever sent you, your sutch a cute little Eevee!" Laura chimed, crouching down next to the brown ball of fur and petting her head. "How did your sister send you your ... uh, what was it again? Right, dog, here?" She looked up at Gristle with a confused yet perplexed look on her face.

Gristle looked confused at Laura's question.
"Uhh, well that's not exactly what happened.."

It's kind of a long story.
Umbria continued.

"Uhh..."
They glanced at each other.
Do you think we should tell them...?

Gristle glared at Umbria.
"You were the snooping one, I think you should be the one to explain."

No, you're the drunk one, I think you're the one to blame.

Karion then took the unfortunate opportunity to practically pounce on Umbria and cuddle her while making highly cat-like sounds.

"A talking ... dog... thing? That's certainly something I have never seen before." Mike comments.

~Flashback~
-[2026]-

Mike drives up to the MegaWatt space center for the first time, marveling at how huge it is. It is complete with manufacturing facilities that utilize 3D printing, a runway, and on the east side there is a vehicle assembly building and launchpad towering above everything else. On the launchpad was a huge cargo rocket in the final stages of getting ready for liftoff which is scheduled to happen in the next few minutes. The rocket contained the Hades 2 asteroid mining probe, the plan was to intercept an asteroid flying by the Earth containing a lot of valuable heavy metals, if all goes well then this mission will pay off for it's self a hundred times over. It is one of the first space missions to make use of Hyperion engines, and this launch will likely be one for the history books. Heck, this entire year has been rather exciting because it is the beginning of the largest space race in history. Asteroid mining is making space travel financially profitable for the first time in history and just about everyone wants in on it, it is no longer just a scientific endeavor.

Mike enters the mission control center where Mason and a lot of space center employees are getting everything ready. Before long the person at the microphone begins the countdown, "10... 9... 8... Guidance is online. 6... 5... Power is internal. 3... 2... Engine start, booster ignition, and liftoff of the Hades 2 on it's mission to exploit the riches of space." The screen shows the rocket lifting off and there is a rumbling that can be heard and felt even in the mission control building as everyone in the room cheers.

(In case it wasn't clear, Umbria is speaking through telepathy. She can't speak using her vocal chords.)

Umbria tried to speak as she was being manhandled by Karion.

...Urgh! She jumped and tried to peek out over Karion's hand. ...Tell them about the machine! she told Gristle.

Gristle looked around.
"...Hey, did I ever tell you about the Deus Ex machine?"

(Bump.)
