Pardon my ignorance, but when do they become medically necessary? :?

I know they're not just accessories, but I'm curious now.

IM GLAD YOU ASKED!! ! now we can actually get to the intellectual side of straps.

More commonly the wrist straps are given to users who have uncontrollable arm spasms or very poor arm control or tone resulting in arms that can jump and hit things or people randomly (common with quadriplegic spastic cerebral palsy) flop off of the armrests or tray (common in many diseases that cause low muscle tone / strength) hence their purpose is to keep the arms in a correct position, some even have wrist + arm cuffs which would be two straps on each arm, the double cuff models are reserved for extremely severe cases. single cuff per arm models are much easier to obtain and prescribe. cuffs come in a range of materials and sizes, most commonly are leather and neoprene.

since i have a disease that is progressive i will loose arm muscle tone / strength.... so its just a matter of time till i can have arm strapples :D maybe even the double cuff ones :D

There are leg straps too? Wow, it really must be a straptologist's dream. :D So tell me about the leg straps. Are they strapped around the ankle, mid calf...?

there are many types of leg straps, there are foot ankle straps like these... Image

there are calf straps too which are again reserved for extreme cases, usually ankle foot straps are common, calf straps less common... all are usually neoprene, leather is more uncommon in this area... probably due to the lack of flexibility maybe..

i would love to have leg straps too hahaha, which will likely come true for me with the ankle foot and calf combo due to my deteoriating muscles... YAY FOR LOTS OF STRAPS!! !

P.S dont get me started on head / neck straps... (again thats a hint!)

I can imagine how comfortable a foot must be in straps like that, and I imagine the calf straps are even more comfy...

Now you've peaked my curiousity; what are head and neck straps like? :D

they design them to provide pressure to force said user to relax and let them do the positioning.. if the user spasms voila the straps hold them in correct position... and of course like any other strap can be adjusted for deep pressure providing :D hence why i love straps, they are so versatile!! !

im so glad you asked,

head and neck straps are used for patients who have extremely spastic necks and or a weak neck and are unable to hold their head up (like me hence i think im due for a head or neck strap soon :D *chants* please be a head strap please be a head strap please be a head strap since it'd be too easy to choke myself with a too tight neck strap hahaha) they can also come in a combo...

some users also require them due to a flexible spinal deformity, by using these straps the user's spine can be externally augmented into a better position... (also another one of my issues)

Image

its the only one i could find on the internet, these companies make it damn hard to get these pictures hahaha...

and i really was kinda wrong about neck straps, shoulda said neck supports but whatever... the second picture has a neck strap on it.. :P

Image

again they are usually neoprene

I see...yeah I guess neck "straps" would be sort of inappropriate, since they can choke you and what's the use it for can't make it tight? :P

The head strap looks comfortable, I wish I had one of those to sleep in.

Is there a particular reason they're made out of neoprene? Or is it just more cost effective?

indeed!! neck straps are useless to me since i cant make it nice and tight... though, it is neoprene!

head strap indeed looks very comfortable, it would go great with a soft squishy neoprene headrest, like this one Image make things nice and tight and voila, good way to fall asleep in your powerchair again..

i definitely wish to have a head strap too...

there are a few reasons why a lot of it is made of neoprene, neoprene is cost effective, very comfortable (for most people... some request leather then) very easy to clean, waterproof, hard to damage, TIGHT!! ! ok ok ok TIGHT is only a benefit to people like me and you hahaha..

only thing with me having every single strap known to man on my powerchair is, id be so comfortable id never want to come out (not to mention what a chore it would be for my caregiver to undo all 20 of my various straps and restraints hahaha...) id probably only be forced to come out to use the toilet to take a s**t, but i use a urinal (pee bottle) to pee when im in my powerchair or bed

Yeah, I think the problem with leather is that it's not as maleable, unless it's really thin leather, so that headrest wouldn't be as comfy...

I'd love to have a headrest, one as soft as a pillow, and a tight head strap with it. :P

I wonder how you can stay awake sitting in so much comfort (and especially when you get more straps), I know I couldn't! :P

Right, leather for a harness is fine, since that does not have to be extremely maleable...

My current headrest is a weird material but it still feels pretty good, i want that headrest and a very tight headstrap, but better yet, heres an even better headrest for me! Image get a load of that, even has a soft neopreney neck thingy! that one and an extremely tight head strap please :D

I wouldnt be able to stay awake, i have a hard time staying awake with just a chest harness, with everything strappled you may as well call me a coma patient for how much ill be sleeping!

I know I would, especially if they were all strapped tight! :D

Now that neck thingy looks comfy, and there's no risk of choking. 8)
