"Doesn't sound familiar," Guinan said. "Could it help us with what we're doing here?"

"The 'dog thing' is an Eevee!" Laura snippily corrected.

"Deus Ex? What's that?" She was still petting the Eevee's head, even though Kairion was holding her.

No, I actually am a dog.
Umbria corrected.

"Hm? But your an Eevee now, arent you?" She asked, tilting her head in confusion at the brown fur ball.

Yes, that's an effect of the Deus Ex machine. Umbria replied.

Keith, could you explain?she asked.

Gristle shrugged. "Sure."
He suddenly adopted
"What the Deus Ex machine is, it's a very powerful device. It can basically do anything. I mean, it can give you powers, turn back time, bring back the dead, even..." Gristle looked at Umbria and snorted. "...bring you to other dimensions."

It's the 'Story Breaker.' Umbria chimed in. A gift from the Chaos God itself. It runs on pure Chaos, and is said to resolve any story.

"For all of the times that a character fails,
you may call on my power, brave lad or lass.
The ultimate weapon of any tale. The power to pull things out of your ass." Gristle chanted.

Gristle grinned.
"Hehe, that's what it said on the inscription."

Umbria glared at Gristle, looking as if she still had quite a bit more to say.
The only drawback of it is, it works in a very... roundabout way.

So...it's a contrived plot device?" Jian asked, looking skeptical. Aelkai, meanwhile, just looked utterly confused until Ia pulled on her shoulder and whispered something in the former's ear.
"Let the 'kitty' go now, Karion, before you hug her too much." Oeuyia advised, but Karion poked the tip of her tongue out and defiantly held onto Umbria even more. Far from being disappointed or stern, Oeuyia simply laughed. "Sorry, looks like you're on your own." She grinned at Umbria's indignant expression.

Laura's eyes went sparkly, and she started talking really fast, her voice rising in pitch the more she talked. "Wait, anything? You see, my starter Pokemon is dead, do you think that machine can bring him back? Oh, theres so much I wanna tell him, if there was a way I could bring him back without using Hatsune, that would be awesome! He also said he wanted to evolve into a Greninja, it's all my fault he died, great Arceus, if I could bring him back, I'd be the happiest girl ever!" At this point, she was grinning like a ninny.

Gristle appeared to think a minute. "Well... yes, but the user can't control how it twists the plot."

He scratched the back of his head nervously. "Y'see... it's rather unpredictable, that's why--"

It makes a bunch of random s**t happen. Umbria said.

Gristle gave a sidelong glare at Umbria.
"Well yes, that's why it's reserved for emergencies." he said, as if stating the obvious.
"Anyway, so what happened was..."

(He was drunk. It was a dare.)

Gristle finally turned to Umbria with a glower. "Would you quit interrupting what I say?!" he snapped.

(You know I came after you to warn you, right?)

Gristle looked confused. "What?"

We knew it was a set-up, that's why I didn't want you to go to the party, said Umbria.

Gristle blinked in confusion. "Wait, you knew from the beginning?"

YES! Why do you think I followed you?! Umbria cried.

Gristle's face looked shocked.
"Well, I-"
He opened his mouth but shut it, then looked at Umbria again. "...Well, s**t."

...Yeah! "s**t" is right, she said irritably. Ember rigged the Deus Ex machine to send you here, and your stupid little "friends" lured you right into her trap! I tried to tell you, but you wouldn't listen!

"Syll! Syylveooon! Syl syl syl!" Anna laughed. <what Anna said: Somebody's getting in trouble and it's finally not Riku getting on to me! Hahaha!>

Riku, Gabe, and Gumball all looked like they were trying to use Leer on Anna.

Umbria turned to everybody else. So in essence, the demon queen is about to cause the apocalypse, the magical hero is the only one who can stop her, and now he's been warped to another dimension.

She smiled and twitched her ears cutely. "Vee!"
(So yeah. You could say we're pretty screwed.)

"And who's the magical hero here?" Laura asked. Even though she knew it was the telepathic Eevee talking, she felt weird talking to a voice inside her head.

(Just curious, what anime is Gristle and Umbria from?)

"If it weren't for all the crazy impossible things that I have seen in the last few days I would be much more surprised then I am, that device does sound impressive though. Do you know who built it? Studying it would certainly be interesting." remarks Mike.

~Flashback~

Mike is busy looking through all the data collected in the aftermath of the failure of the Hades 2 asteroid mining mission. From what people could figure out the probe got near the asteroid before some piece of space debris, likely man made, collided with it causing a loss of signal. Mason bursts into Mike's office. "At least knock before-" Mike is interrupted by Mason, "No time for that, I was just on a phone call with the United States president!" Mike looks rather surprised, "Really? What did he say?" Mason replies, "Brace yourself, this is rather crazy. The CIA has looked into the Hades 2 failure and they found that it was actually shot down intentionally by one of the nations in the Heiwa Federation, most likely Japan."
Mike: "Why did he tell you this?"
Mason: "Well, this is the first time an act of war has happened in space over resources, and many experts predict that it's only going to escalate from here. Think about when the American continent was first discovered, nations fought many wars over those new resources. Similarly the Antarctica treaty was made banning exploitation of Antarctic resources to prevent that from happening again, but that approach won't work here. You see, we now have the technology to exploit the resources of space and other worlds and we are already at war so no force on Earth is gonna' stop the s**tstorm of space war coming our way."

Mike looks devastated. "The Hyperion engine has made everything worse..."
Mason: "This was bound to happen at some point, it's not your fault. Anyway, the President told me this because he wants to prepare the Western Alliance for the aforementioned s**tstorm and they have offered us an amazing deal to develop space combat capable-"
Mike interrupts, "NO! Decline it!"
Mason: "If we don't do this then someone else will, all we can do is choose weather we will profit from this or not, that's just how capitalism works."
Mike: "We both own 26% of the company stock, so this can't happen unless I agree and I say we decline the offer."
Mason: "48% of the company stock is in the hands of investors so this can still happen if just over half of them agree with me, and I know that they will because this deal will most certainly raise the company stock price."

"OKAY! You got me... Accept the contract..." says Mike in defeat, thinking about all the potential consequences that it could have.

In a nutshell, it's sort of like writing a book except you swap authors periodically and each author controls the actions of their respective characters, there may also be "NPC's" which anyone can control the actions of. Some role playing games are moderated and have a lot of rules such that it's a challenge to keep your character alive, but in this one we are more concerned with making a cool and fun story.

When Mike asked who built the Deus Ex Machine, Gristle laughed.
"Who built it?" he burst. "...The Great Dolphin did!" he said, looking at Mike as if he should know who that was.

After a while he tilted his head, obviously noting that something was off. "Have you never heard of the Great Dolphin?"

"I've heard of the Great Dauphin, but that was on the human planet Earth." Jian commented.
