Xenon,
At work, I also am known as nice and friendly. I am very serious about my work, and don't care for excessive talking. People know I put my work first, but I am also very friendly.
I am thinking that this may be the key to success for people who are not naturally outgoing or who lack social skills. At work, I deliberately compensate for my own lack of social skills by always being gracious and polite. Combined with my being mild-mannered and friendly, the others accept that I'm the quiet type. They also know that I am willing to help when asked; lately, I seem to have gotten a rep as an "Excel guru", since anytime anyone else in the department has a problem with Microsoft Excel they ask me for help.
Not bad for someone with a lack of social skills, I'd say.
