He was fantastic. I have some of his shorts,
and they are amazing.

Hmmm. I got "H.G. Wells". Not bad, not bad...

"The first major literary talent to make himself at home in the science fiction field, greatly expanding its popularity."

If I had to freebase it, I'd say part Asimov, part Heinlein, a dash of Well, and just a pinch of Brin.

But I have a lot more reading to do.

Hal Clement (Harry C. Stubbs)
A quiet and underrated master of "hard science" fiction who, among other things, foresaw integrated circuits back in the 1940s.

Althought I have to admit.. he wouldn't have been my choice... but oh well...

William Gibson

The chief instigator of the "cyberpunk" wave of the 1980s, his razzle-dazzle futuristic intrigues were, for a while, the most imitated work in science fiction.

I'm surprised. I really enjoyed Neuromancer, but haven't gotten 'round to any of his other stuff.

Arthur C. Clarke
Well known for nonfiction science writing and for early promotion of the effort toward space travel, his fiction was often grand and visionary

(he was a science fiction writer, too)

William Gibson? Who the heck is William Gibson? I too wanted to get Frank Herbert. (The fact that I do not know who William Gibson is is a sign that I need to read more science fiction.)

He wrote a lot of science-fiction relating to cybernetics, cyberspace (a term, according to Wikipedia, he actually coined), hacking, etc. He's often said to be one of the major influences of recent sci-fi, particularly Ghost in the Shell (manga and anime) and The Matrix.
