Yeah, and they don't turn into Pokeballs when they evolve, either - Electrode do the same thing.

Voltorb and Electrode must have had a really bad experience being picked up before. Maybe a trainer picked it up dropped it and it blew up... Or maybe they were asleep, a trainer came by, thought it was a pokeball, and picked it up and stuffed it in their backpack.

Yeah, that would be very startling if they were sleeping and were picked up - I don't really blame them for exploding in self-defense in that case. If I were sleeping and someone tried to pick me up, I'd probably react pretty violently, too

Me too, but it would still be startling, and the person trying to do it would probably get hit because I'd react instinctively.

It can't be much fun being Geodude either, since the Pokedex entry says people often step or trip on them. Maybe that's why Geodude learns explosion too?
