It always tickles me when people who have never left the first world rail against sweatshops.

When I lived in Guatemala my neighbors worked at a large Korean-run clothing manufacturing facility. Let me tell you, in a country with a 30% unemployment rate, those were some very enviable and well-paying jobs.

The biggest problem with working in the maquilas down there is that the local gangs and serial killers know where to obtain a fresh supply of pretty young ladies to rape, kidnap, murder, etc. I'm unfortunately not kidding. I can't tell you how many headless bodies were found in the streets just during the months I was there.
