This thread was dead earlier today. It took me 30 minutes to catch up while watching the tape of House. I have to tape it while I watch Reaper.

I wanted a SNES so badly....

I didn't get one until 1993 maybe 1994... I had to sell my NES and all my old games to get it...

Boo! Sega Genesis was better. Especially with the add on 32X and CD.

I had an SNES when I was around 4-5. I liked it. There was this one game I really liked.

It was scrolling shooter. Forget the name of it though. The first level's boss were two huge tank things. The 2nd level's boss was a huge plane thing. The 3rd level was on an ocean I think. And it was a bit 3D like but not. If you know what I mean.

Mother stepped on it when I was almost 5 (it broke :( ). I cried a lot over the game because it was my favorite.

Does anyone know what the game I'm talking about is?

Right you are

Sega does what Nintendon't

Er... actualy I was a bit of a Nintendo fanboy back in the day... despite owning the Genesis before the SNES. My dad bought it and I would play it on the weekends...

Eventually I got bored of it and just brought my NES over and played Final Fantasy over and over and over again... I beat it using a 4 Black Belt party... 8)

I didn't own a Sega Genesis back in the 90's. Heck, I barely remember the Super Nintendo!

How was it better?

I thought each were good in that they had console-specific games that I enjoyed.

SNES:
Breath of Fire (I and II)
Zelda (ALttP)
Mario Kart (Come on...you know that was awesome.)
Super Mario World (See above)
Chrono Trigger
Secret of Mana
Secret of Evermore
...I'm sure there were more, but that's a good sampling.

Genesis:
Crusader of Centy (I'd kill to be able to download that for the Wii virtual console...)
Ecco the Dolphin
Golden Axe (I, II, III)
Beyond Oasis
...I'm kinda drawing a blank, I know there were more than those four that I liked.

It's a shame a lot of those games aren't remade. It would be awesome to play old games.

Well as any well developed gamer should tell you, it's all about the games. And towards the end I think the SNES just had a massive amount of games I liked better.

From a purely hardware point of view, the Sega Genesis had more raw computing power, but the SNES had more sophisticated sound and graphics chips.

This resulted in games for the SNES looking overall better yet often had annoying slow down. And especially in regards to the sound, SNES had amazing sound... and great game composers to take advantage of it. (well genesis did too, and it's sound wasn't bad... I may have nostalgic goggles on)

The Genesis got those add ons, Sega-CD and 32X... which segmented the market and didn't have many games to drive the platforms.

Nintendo did it's own special tricks though, by putting hardware directly on the cartridges. Star Fox and Yoshi's Island are the notable examples to use this technology.

If you said video game history is an obsession of mine... you'd be right...
