The BBC just covered this subject today on World, Have Your Say, in context with the death penalty. As a guest on the show they had a man who had been on death row and was exonerated. Chilling, some of the statistics that were cited and the stories told.

Meh, I was bored so I defended an unpopular viewpoint.

Nietzsche first said it I believe.

Playing devil's advocate can be an interesting exercise.

Dr. Greebler was ready, he'd put one of his newest guards - a lithe black woman in cyro with an implanted cyber rig.

Againist the law?

Very.

But oh so nessesary. It was obvious whatever it was that it would have the ship in days. Crenkin and her security forces were putting up a valiant fight on Command and Engineering but they'd lost Recreation, Medical, Manufacturing and Operations. It was no telling how long his own guards and sentry guns could hold out.

Soon he would activate his bulkhead locks and prepare himself to sit it out with his own elite bodyguards and hope his ace could survive the trek out of Medical to his own lab on the Research deck.

"Menkin, pull ze men back and prepare to seal us in zis bulkhead."

The board was set, the pieces in place and the game begun.

There would be war on the Swift.

And it would be bloody.

Personally, I think pedophiles, rapists and serial killers should be exempt from the Helsinki convention.....

Meh, this time from Lisa Crenkin's point of view.

She is head of security on the Swift.

==================================

It was bad, they'd lost the starboard nacelle on Engineering. It was the last place they'd held into in Engineering and now they could shut down the ship or even activate the self destruct. But she knew they had other plans, one of the techs had registered changes in the anti-grav. Which could mean only one thing.

They were changing course back towards Earth.

An extract from a story I am writing.

"Jain? Is this a secure channel?" Dr Adan yelled desperately through the cybercom link.

"Yes."

"Is this EVA suit PF-safe?"

"You're gonna Plunge-Fight Dyne?"

"We're stuck in the bloody airlock. We've both got on suits."

"As far as I know, they are. They have bail-out parachutes built in, and can withstand re-entry."

"I have the Bayned here."

"He's never won a Plunge Fight yet, you'll die!"

"If he is able to cause more sabotage, we all will!"

A whisper of static.

"Captain Erzon says do it."

"Finished our phone call, have we?"

Adan looked at Dyne's contemptuous gaze. But he noticed he had his back to the hatch, with the 'emergency vent' button next to him.

"I would say it is a pity that you have to die, sawbones, but I am known for my honesty."

"Cark's crap. If you were, you wouldn't have betrayed us Dyne!"

Dyne raised his blaster, but Adan, out of sheer desperation and adrenaline, was faster. He fired the Bayned into the 'emergency vent' button. The hatch blasted open, and Adan and Dyne were swept out into space with the air in the airlock....

...thinking, "Where's an Infinite Improbability Drive when you need one?"

Nice. ^_^

But Crenkin had little time for this revelation. Security had been compromised on the nearest checkpoint. Picking up her M45 Assault Rifle she felt a lump come into her throat and sweat flood her skin. Their was little chance she would survive and she decided to pull out her voice journal for one last recording.

"This looks like the end, I've three clips of Anti-Personnel and one clip of Armour Piercing for the Big f*****s. I'm saving the hand grenade for last, when those f*****s get out of rounds I'll pull the pin and one a bear hug. No way they are getting my body. If someone finds this log I have one message: Keep fighting and kill as many as you can! Don't let them get to Earth!"

With that she put it back down on the desk.

Gunshots and yelling could be heard in the corridor, with two grenades finishing them like periods.

The only thing she could her was the low rasping and slimy - slurping sound some of them made.

The lights went out and she quietly swore under her breath "Bastards shut up the main reactor." She held her gun tightly in the blackness, like a security blanket or a charm a zealot might use to ward off spirits. She could feel everything, her breathing, the rhymic pumping of her heart, the sighing and creaking of the ship, and the noises they made.

Two them rounded the corner on her, she could feel it. Letting her gun loose on them she her the ploop of their bodies. But those were only the first, soon hordes of them came down the hall. And her gun was soon empty and her clips all gone.

She pulled the pin of her incendiary grenade and ran for a big one, screaming at the top of her lungs.

She died a good death but it meant little. There were still thousands of them on board.

"Plunge Fighting" is a duel while re-entering a planetary atmosphere with only an armoured space-suit and melee weapons. I was inspired mostly by a video from Metroid Prime 3, where Samus must fight Ridley while plunging down a shaft.....

I'm not writing any more about my story, but anyone feel free to ask any questions. My answering them may be a different matter, depending what they are....

BTW, I've just finished reading Monstrous Regiment....
