A compound consisting of four Oxygen atoms, one hydroxyl/bound to Hydrogen.
Two of the Oxygen atoms have double bonds.

Connected to what looks like 6 Carbon atoms, with 3 double bonds.

Aspirin?

Ok, wild guess.

So Quatermass, how do you use aspirin as a bomb?

You looked, didn't you?

Oh well.

Yes, it's acetylsalicylic acid, aka aspirin.

Now, in one of my chemistry classes when I was going to QUT, I had to make and refine aspirin over a period of some weeks.

At one point, they wanted us to refine aspirin using a solvent. However, they needed us to actually experiment to find the solvent out of four options. I cannot recall two of them. However, one was water, and the other was X4. Until now, I've never learnt completely what this crap is, but putting it through Wikipedia, I found out that it is actually petroleum ether, aka benzine. Benzine is NOT to be confused with benzene, as benzine is a mixture of various hydrocarbons.

Anyway, through what I thought was careful experimentation, I found that X4 was the best solvent, despite the fact that it was flammable.

I was refining the aspirin using the X4 when I noticed fumes coming out of the beaker. Stupidly, I attempted to stifle them using paper towelling. Soon afterwards, the paper and fumes ignited.

Thankfully, there was no explosion, just a nice little cocktail Molotov would have been proud of, a fountain of flame. They still had to use the fire extinguisher though, and I felt rather foolish when they explained that the true solvent was water!

I wasn't injured, except my pride, and nothing else was damaged. The beaker was a little sooty, though....

Nice. Are you still doing Chemistry?

I haven't gotten to Organic yet, just finishing second year of general.

Cool Molotov flamethrower though.

Yeah, but I'm focusing more on physics and electronics now. Do you mean Quatermass?

Not practically. I'm doing a Masters' degree, and I don't need to do that. Besides, the only flames I've been let near at Griffith are for Microbiology, if I recall correctly, and that's for sterilising loops. I love to hear bacteria crackle and pop.....
