...Or did I? Did they go to Finland after the Siege of Leningrad?
The German Luftwaffe helped Finland all along the war. However, when the war started, Finland was alone against the Soviet Union. Our front was separate from the German eastern front. No other country was willing to join the Finnish Army in our hopeless struggle against the world's largest land-based military force. However, my ancestors did pretty well in the early months of the war, but little by little it turned out to be impossible.
Understandably, the United States, for example, could not start a separate war on Finland's side against the Soviet Union because the two were already allies. The same goes for most western countries. In fact, the United Kingdom declared war upon Finland but the US never did (and this put Roosevelt in a bit awkward position). But this is something the Finns will always remember.
And, as we all know, Germany eventually lost the whole war and Russia took over most of Eastern Europe, including Finland in relatively mild terms.
