I guess it could be either or. The 49ers were named after the gold prospectors who arrived in California in 1849 for the gold rush.

I didn't know that about the 49ers. I never even connected the two :oops: But then again, to me the SF 49ers is just something I've seen on caps, so not much to make me think about it either. (Yes, caps like that are sold here, don't ask me why since we don't follow them here, to say the least.)
