Years ago I read a story about some guy who had gastric ulcers. His doctor prescribed a bland diet for him. The fellow looked at the unappetising fare listed thereon, curled his lip, and stated, "I'd do better if I ate nothing but pancakes and shaving cream." A scientific study was promptly organised. The pancake-and-shaving-cream eaters did indeed fare neither better nor worse than their bland-diet counterparts.

All this happened well before anyone thought to lay the blame on Helicobacter pylori, naturally enough.

Yeah, yeah. It's your turn, SleepyDragon.

What is your name?

What is your quest?

*roars*

I am Sleepy Dragon!

I am overdue for molting! I seek the magic lotion of healing which will permit me to shed these wretched scales! Something sodium-hydroxide-based, I'm thinking. Not acidic. Definitely not bleach, either, it turns the scales the most ghastly shade of greyish-yellow.

Shaving cream, hmmm. It can't do any harm.

*irritably scratches one wing*

Does it use a shaped charge for initial penetration?

Not sure, but if it helps with penetration, maybe so.

Well, you do know what a shaped charge is, doncha?

Yes. A brilliant example would be the Claymore mine. Shaped charges are also used in reactive armour, too.

I meant like a HEAT missile. A Claymore is more like a shotgun. I meant like an inverted cone of metal surrounded by explosive. Explosive goes off, metal cone inverts and becomes a hypersonic slug of metal going at a great rate of knots. Punch through most things.

In one of the mines where my husband used to work, he supervised quite a lot of shotfiring. Drill holes in the face in the specified pattern, tamp in the powder, position and wire detonators, retreat around two corners, and up she goes. The dets were timed so that some would fire milliseconds before or after others as required. If the round didn't fire the way it was supposed to, much tedious investigation was needed to find out why.
