Welcomed? I thought Finns were too reserved to welcome anyone. 8)

Although I have a (very forgiving and patient) language exchange penpal in Turku. I hope to meet up with him at some point. I still haven't been brave enough to talk to him on Skype yet.

I am making a list of places to visit, although by the time I have seen my family, and I also want to catch up with my Italian penpals, the Finnish trip is going to be running short on time and money. Any suggestions will be gratefully received though. If nothing else, I can check them out from the comfort of my armchair :)

I'm afraid there won't be many interesting spots in Finland. Our history is short for a European nation.

What most German and British tourists want to find here, is silence. Not the silence of people (we are talkative at times) but the silence of nature. But this is nothing new for a New Zealander, your South Island is one such place in the world where you can hear your own thoughts.

Well the natural beauty and "natural history" of Finland would be well worth seeing, even if your cultural history isn't as old as most of the rest of Europe.

I think NZ must be much the same - a sort of southern flip of the same coin for natural beauty and also not a place people go to see venerable old buildings, cathedrals and basilicas - just to enjoy the solitude as well as have adventure. (Queenstown, South Island is called the adventure capital of NZ as I recall.)

I come from England Krabo, I grew up with old and historic. I am much more a fan of the silence of nature. You are right though, the South Island is wonderful for that. I would love to live there, so much more spacious and visually dramatic than the North Island.

Enviro, Queenstown in very beautiful, but I am not into adventure sports. I am not very brave, I prefer small adventures. :)

So, what is the new topic of conversation, anyone?

Catchy, but it may only appeal to a rather limited audience.

It would be very high class people that would be interested though. 8)

You know, I was thinking we are a rather international bunch here. Last night it was just me and you, but some days with our regulars, we can be having a conversation between:
New Zealand
Finland
South Africa
Canada
Australia
USA
UK
Norway
I'm sure there are a few others that I am can't think of right now.

We could teach the UN a thing or two. 8)

Are the people at the UN capable of learning anything?

Is this the questions thread now?

No, probably not. But it's a novelty for me to be part of a good example. I'm usually the one that is held up as a prime example of what not to do. :P

Just remembered something. There's this excellent TV mini series Top of the Lake from New Zealand. I started to watch it at episode 2 and I liked it right away. Now I have to find episode 1 somewhere on the net. (Our TV channels cannot show past episodes of certain programs and this one seems to be in that category.)

Thanks Krabo, I had not heard of that one. I guess that's what happens when you don't have a TV.

It sounds interesting, I will have to see if I can check it out from the library. Sadly we don't get much relating to Finland here. I think I have seen two things so far, that I have sent in great excitement to my Finnish penpal. 8)

Oh well, now I have to go. (And I lose because, after all, this is the losing thread.)
