I recently discovered that the opposite of misogyny is called misandry.

The sound of a baby crying? No insult to you, it's just that I hate the sound of a baby crying. As in near homicidal mania hate.

My nephew Birdie, whimpering when fussy and tired, causes Xan to hyperventilate, shriek, moan, and rock to and fro. I'm not going to discuss how Xan was himself at the age of one...

Makes me think of the Inspector Morse episode in which Morse complains about how he can't stand the sound of an infant's crying. The long-suffering Sergeant Lewis responds, a touch waspishly, that this is precisely the point. You can't stand it, so you attend to the child's needs, thus stopping it from crying.

It is the worst sound in the world; when I hear a baby crying, I actually want to murder the baby in some horrible way. When I'm on the tube, and a baby comes onto the carriage, I move into the next carriage to save myself.

I hate it when parents bring the little sods into public libraries and make no effort to shut them up.

As a parent, you become selectively deaf as a defense mechanism. Unless the uproar escalates above a certain decibel level, or someone's blood is being shed, you simply tune it out. Otherwise humanity would have foundered millennia ago.
