And one mustn't forget the classic in the first Fawlty Towers episode, A Touch of Class.

Basil spots Manuel going by with three breakfast trays, and moves over, frustrated.

FAWLTY: Manuel! Please! There is too much butter on those trays.

MANUEL: Que?

FAWLTY: There is too much butter (points to each tray with each word) on-those-trays!

MANUEL: No, no, no, Senor.

FAWLTY: What?

MANUEL: Not 'on-those-trays'. No, sir, 'uno-dos-tres'. Uno-dos-tres.

FAWLTY: No, no. Hay mucho burro alli!

MANUEL: Que?

FAWLTY: Hay mucho burro alli!

MANUEL: Ah, mantequilla!

FAWLTY: What?

MANUEL: Mantequilla. Burro is, is like hee-haw!

Your avatar is freaking me out. Reminds me of an old (original) Battlestar Galactica episode. My favorite one in fact.

Yes, bugger off, iamnotaparakeet. I did not ask for that translation.

Why? It makes more sense now! Manuel is now an English speaking person working in a hotel in Spain and Basil is a Spaniard and couldn't care less about his choice of words in English.

Leave it to actual translators working in Spain, Mexico, and for the Hispanics in the US. They can make the puns work anyway.

I may not have a college degree in speaking Spanish, but aside from 2 years of textbook knowledge I've lived with Mexicans for 3 months and have been a part of a bilingual Church for a year. I know Spanish fairly well; it was sort of an off-shoot of studying etymology and history.

Yes, but reverse-translating the dialogue from Fawlty Towers sort of takes the culture-clash out of the situation. It's like Futurama, where French was said to be a dead language. In the French translation, they made it German, on recollection.

I imagine the French wouldn't be too amused otherwise.

Would you focus some attention on Strapples in the Three word at a time story? He is being disruptive again and had even said, "screw you" to Beth before he edited (it was the post after Beth said "that's four words" if you can retrieve different levels of edits. He edited before the next reply.)

I don't go in the three words at a time story.
