As the mutant bolted Virgil fired a shot at her head but managed to miss and couldn't get a bead on her again until she was on top of him. As she sturggled to kill him he got a good aim at one of her arms and fired.

The arm reeled back and the monster screamed - turning it's face towards him. This is too easy he thought to himself as he took aim and put the last three rounds in the clip into her face. The corpse fell to the ground with a thud and bled blackish blood.

"You alright Colonel!?"

"Just about. Thanks for that, she was nuts." Saldana picked up the LMG he had dropped, and examined the corpse. Same features as every other single damn freak out there! "Alan, is that all of them?"

Reloading his gun Virgil pointed the scope out into the horizon. "I don't see anymore from here." Virgil felt like he'd find a missing bodily organ in this rifle, he felt like it was one with him. An organ to carry death across the blasted land.

"I'll watch from up here for a while. Just leave me a radio and an energy bar."

After the Colonel had brought him the binoculars and energy bar like he asked Virgil began his vigil. It was easy enough, stand at the corner of the warehouse for few minutes and then go to another corner and stare for a while.

Once he saw a bear - obviosly heavily mutated and debated trying to kill it. In the end decidng to leave it if left them alone.

Eventually Virgil just picked up a chair from the warehouse and sat down in it near the center of the roof, facing towards the ladder to the roof. Just in case someting tried to pull something.

Digging through the soil, Sydney heard the battle stop, and then he crawled further on. Having heard, he'd thought he'd dig a little further away before he emerged, just in case there was a nasty surprise waiting for him, although if he did so in front of Virgil or one of the others, the surprise would have been mutual, though probably terminal for Sydney. He simply did not know how resilient his body was (albeit resilient enough to not be compressed by nearly two metres worth of soil), and he decided he was going to avoid unnecessary fire fights.

Suddenly, a large amount of soil subsided in the tunnel behind him. Crap, thought Sydney, hope no-one noticed....

Virgil was staring at the horizon but heard a sound nearby. His reaction to put him near Sydney's grave - some soil had made a racket for some reason. Worried about the idea of mutant gophers Virgil pulled out his Magnum and used a drain pipe to slide down to the ground and hurried over to investigate.

Feeling a like Dirty Harry like he calmly spoke " I know what you're thinking. Did he fire five shots or only four? Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I've kinda lost track myself. But being as this is a .50 Smith and Weston Magnum, the most powerful revolver in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya punk?"

He smirked sickly as he pulled the hammer back.

"Aw, horses***! !!" thought Sydney to himself. He kept perfectly still and hoped that Virgil was aiming for the subsidence....

"So ya don't feel lucky gopher? Good - this son of b***h still has all five shots and I have few extra clips. Not to mention a sniper rifle and a pair of binoculars." Pointing at his eyes and then at the ground he said "I'm watching you, mutated dirt rat. Get in the Aussie's grave and I'll jump right in and strangle you, Motherf***er."

Using his warehouse key he locked the door behind him and made sure the recently wielded on siding held. Climbing back up the ladder he picked up the binoculars again and focused on the soil near Sydney's grave. Cameron was back again, this time she was watching the ladderway "I gotcha covered, Virgie. If something comes up you'll know."

With a sigh of relief, Sydney kept carefully along. No way in hell he was going to end up a colander, courtesy of Virgil's guns.

And Cameron. Who the hell was she? I don't remember anyone of the sort....

Virgil was even more insane than Sydney was. All Sydney really had was a sort of anti-conscience, accompanied by drums. The way he talked, though, it seemed like Virgil thought she was there....

Carefully repacking the soil around and behind him to prevent further subsidence, Sydney continued along at a snail's pace....

Virgil kept guarding the warehouse steadily, getting up a few times to get the tiredness out of him. On the horizon he spotted a tank moving parallel to the warehouse, it wasn't going to come into contact with the bunker if it kept course. Virgil watched the thing as it sped across the horizon - it had a cross with a mushroom cloud behind it engraved on the side.

"Glad to see the Church survived the Apocalypse" the words were tinged with extreme sarcasm. As it sped off the horizon he decided to tell guys when he got back down into the bunker. Wasn't important enough to annoy them right now. Though the next time he stood watch he'd be sure to bring an RPG - 7 with him.

Sydney heard the rumble, felt it, saw the clods of dirt come down.

Was that a tank? Must mean there are other survivors, unless zombies have learned how to drive a tank.... And of course, the others had vehicles, but no tank.

Sydney continued his digging....

Virgil heard artillery shells in the distance and could make out explosions. "War never changes." Virgil sighed and sat back down in his chair. "Not even a nuclear Apocolypse can change us." Opening up his energy bar he ate slowly and returned to watching the ground.

No mutant gopher would burrow into his warehouse.

Soon, Sydney hit concrete, at a diagonal angle.

Ahhhh, here's the warehouse, and I'm facing, hmmm, that-a-way.

Wait, how did I get a compass in my head?

Since I wanted one. Besides, most birds can do so. Just a matter of aligning the iron content of cells in just the right way.

Anyway, Virgil hopped down earlier, and he thought he heard a drain pipe rattling as Virgil slid down it. There were only a few drain pipes along the entire warehouse, and he was gambling that Virgil would have slid down the one closest to the only ladder to the roof. So it meant he had to tunnel a few more meters, go around the corner, then emerge as closely to the wall as he could.

((Flagg, I'm going to do Sydney's re-emergence, and I'm going to do so in such a way that not only do the others doubt his story, but Virgil starts to question his own sanity even more. I mean, he's already seeing a dead woman, if she even existed at all....))

Virgil thought he felt a minor vibration in the concrete and spun out of control. "DAMNIT MUTANT GOPHER I WARNED YOU!" Pulling his revolver out of his holster he fired all five shots into the ground on the side he thought the vibration came from and then he reloading and shot twice more. Replacing the two bullets he returned to his chair. Cameron spoke the first time since the mess hall "I don't think that's a gopher...."

"Shut up Cam, what the hell could it be? Sydney?!"

Twisting around, Sydney pulled the bullet off where it had hit his left arm. He was wondering whether it was the foot or so of soil above him, or something else that had stopped the bullet from being anything more than an annoying sting. He looked up.

Paranoia will get you in the end Sydney.

He found that his hearing picked up quite a lot, even underground.

"Shut up Cam! What the hell could it be, Sydney?!"

Still talking to that imaginary woman, Virgil? Must be your religion. Dylan Moran once said that religion was taking imaginary friends into childhood. Time to disavow his illusion. He carefully dug upwards, until all that was left was a shell of soil. Enough to camouflage him from the raving nutjob above. Now, was the time to wait, until the call for action. He could become....

....still....

He wondered if this would work as he let his legs become tight coils....
