Haha, thanks. But if only I considered intelligence to be a boon :( Ignorance is bliss so they say, and I couldn't agree more. Why be intelligent when it'll only lead to a never ending struggle to understand that which cannot be understood. Life.

I'd much rather not see the endless contradictions/fallacy in it all. But hehe, I guess I still get to use my purty big words <3

Or have you forgotten all the time he spent in that Library in Nibelheim, before he realized what truly plagued him?

He read all of the crap in the library, but it was all misleading. They thought, at first, that Jenova was an Ancient, remember? Sephiroth thought he was the rightful heir to the Planet, when in reality his mother wasn't an Ancient. He realised that mistake later, but he was too far gone by then. But what if things worked out differently? Just because one has great power doesn't mean one can't learn responsibility. And with a will like his, he may have been able to resist, and even overcome Jenova's power.

Crisis Core apparently adds a scene where Genesis actually appears in the Nibelheim Reactor and taunts Sephiroth further into madness.

It's true, there was quite the confusion as to Jenova's origins. I can't say what he ever knew about her, but if he had once thought she was a noble being like the Ancients, surely it would only twist him more to learn she was the great Destroyer of Worlds.

After all, he's still Human. And I can't perceive how maddening it would be to learn, that the real reason you never fit amongst those around you was because you were part of The great Destroyer of Worlds.

Upon learning that, coupled with his unmatched strength, what other recourse did he have? He had killed many, not knowing the reason he survived the encounters. And so, he fully gave in to what he felt was his true being.

He was a God in the making. So portrayed by his Seraph form. A God amongst Gods, I would consider him. A direct detachment of Jenova, holding meaning through any "reunion" held. And upon learning that...his purpose became clear.

End this failed experiment known as "creation." There could be no other way, for surely a greater being looks down on our horribly flawed species.

But even a being greater in power has their own flaws. And don't give me that stuff that he had no choice. There are some times in life where you have no choice, and other times where you have choice. If things had turned out differently, Sephiroth would not have turned out to be villainous. It was a singularity of coincidence and choice that made him a villain.

If you were talking about, say, Kefka, I would not disagree, as the most likely cause of his villainy was his derangement due to the Magitek infusion process. Exdeath (from FFV) probably had less of a choice, as he was made from a tree that had been used to seal countless evil spirits in the past, including (according to some sources) Enuo. And Yu Yevon's mind probably collapsed from the strain of being Sin and keeping the Dream Zanarkand going.

But look, for example, at Vayne Solidor from Final Fantasy XII. His motives are arguably altruistic, in that he, with Venat, wishes to free humanity from the Occuria's manipulations. While not the best fleshed out of Final Fantasy villains, he still seems to care about his brother, even when devolving into a more demonic form.

Yes, and hate is a flaw. And pertaining to choice, circumstance decides everything in one's life. So simple it seems to point out the obvious paths before someone else, yet impossible to understand what it means to them.

*Shrugs.*

BTW, where's your avatar from? I've only recently become enamoured of Death Note, so most of my previous avatars are either from Doctor Who, British comedy, or varied other sources.

It's the ending scene in the episode "Forever with Lord Sesshomaru" of InuYasha. I hate to jump on any bandwagon, but InuYasha portrays a great deal of human nature in my eyes. Especially the parity between hate and love...and how they seem to always intertwine.

I had originally gone with the intense stare of Legato Bluesummers right eye, symbolizing my disdain for humanity...but I guess this place softened me up a bit, so I went for a more hopeful approach.

Ah, Inuyasha. I don't think I have watched it or read the manga, but I know of it. A schoolgirl is hurled centuries back in time, encountering a 'demon' apparently sealed up by her ancestor (or at least past doppelganger).

But Legato Bluesummers is from Trigun. I have watched a little of that. Didn't quite appeal to me. Actually, I see Vash the Stampede as being rather like the Doctor from Doctor Who. Both look human, but are actually an alien sort of being centuries old, have a range of personalities ranging from the facetious and clownish to the dark and sincere, and, despite respect for life, death and destruction follow them both wherever they go.

I was attracted to Death Note because of the rave reviews, not to mention the fact that it asks some pretty deep questions about morality and the death penalty. I like to think of Death Note as an 'amorality tale'. Normally, I'm not that much of an anime fan, just watching some Dragonball, Evangelion and the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series, as well as Planetes. Death Note is actually the first anime I've actually bought on DVD instead of borrowing it from the library.

I highly recommend further watching Trigun. It's lessons on life, though but strange metaphors to some, deeply affected me.

I'm both Vash and Knives, but even still it helped me to realize things I never thought I could.

"No one has the right to take the life of another. No one...has the right...to take the life of another! Everyone has a future. Isn't that right? Stop. Stop the fighting. If we don't stop the hate and sorrow sometime...we'll never make any progress. We weren't born to steal, were we?"

"That's it...that must be it! People have many different ways of thinking..even if you make a mistake, if you realize it was a mistake, it's always possible to fix it. Then, if you turn around, you will see the future. This Wisdom must be realized for oneself..."

Rem...I'm so glad that I met you, but I can't help but miss you...(Hint: Rem, isn't Rem in my context.)

Also, you're missing the great point in Trigun. 2 Alien beings, portraying such mirror opposite, yet important human emotions. Despite being a superior breed of beast, they were raised as Humans.

I still can't understand when it was that Knives gave in to his feelings of hate/being alone. But I guess if I knew that, I'd be one step closer to defining a "Human."

"What is there in this life to truly make it worthwhile?" "Hmm...cats, cats are nice."

Bad quoting, but I had to.

Actually, you could apply that to various heroes both from anime and western culture. Goku from Dragonball, Superman, and of course, my all-time favourite, the Doctor from Doctor Who, although he is more of a self-taught human.

As for your quoting Trigun, here's some excellent quotes from Doctor Who about life:

An Unearthly Child wrote:
The Doctor: If you could touch the alien sand, and hear the cry of strange birds, and watch them wheel in another sky, would that satisfy you?

The Aztecs wrote:
The Doctor: You can't rewrite history. Not one line!

The Dalek Invasion of Earth wrote:
(Just before the Doctor leaves his grand-daughter behind on Earth to be with the man she loves)
The Doctor: One day, I shall come back. Yes, I shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties. Just go forward in all your beliefs, and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine.

The Massacre of St Bartholomew's Eve wrote:

(On his companions leaving him)

The Doctor: And now they've all gone.... none of them could understand. Not even my little Susan, or Vicki. And as for Barbara and Chatterton- Chesterton, they were all too impatient to get to their own time. Perhaps I should go home, back to my own planet. But I can't....

Power of the Daleks wrote:
(The Doctor has just regenerated, and his companions are suspicious. Ben is making him try a ring he wore pre-regeneration)

Ben: The Doctor always wore this. If you are him it should fit... (Ring falls off) That settles it!
The Doctor: I'd like to see a butterfly fit into a chrysalis case after it spreads its wings.
Polly:Then you did change.
The Doctor: Life depends on change, and renewal.
Ben: Oh, that's it, you've been renewed, have you?
The Doctor: Renewed? Have I? That's it, I've been renewed. It's part of the TARDIS. Without it I couldn't survive.

The Moonbase wrote:
The Doctor: There are some corners of the universe which have bred the most terrible things. Things that act against everything we believe in. They must be fought.

Evil of the Daleks wrote:
The Doctor: I am not a student of human nature. I am a professor of a far wider academy of which human nature is merely a part.

Tomb of the Cybermen wrote:
Eric Klieg : "How did you know [the answer to the logic riddle] in the first place?"

The Doctor : "Oh, I used my own, special technique."

Eric Klieg : "Oh, really, Doctor... and may we know what that is?"

The Doctor : "Keeping my eyes open and my mouth shut!"

And later, discussing their travels with his companion, Victoria...

The Doctor : "Our lives are different to anybody else's. That's the exciting thing. Nobody in the universe can do what we're doing."

That whole sequence is amazing, in fact, as the Doctor is reassuring Victoria about her father, killed by the Daleks.

The Enemy of the World wrote:
The Doctor: People spend all their time making nice things and then other people come along and break them.

And that's just the first two Doctors, out of 10! 8O
